Abstract

Modern e-commerce platforms often operate search, recommendation, personalization, and CRM systems independently, limiting opportunities for proactive customer re-engagement. This is particularly challenging for exploratory intents such as best smartphones or latest 5G phones, where users may leave the platform for external research before purchasing. We present a scalable, production-deployed framework that bridges search and CRM workflows through AI-powered Product Research Agents. The system identifies users with exploratory purchase intent and low engagement, conducts grounded multi-agent product research using behavioral signals, external knowledge, and enterprise catalog data, and delivers personalized recommendations through WhatsApp. We evaluate the framework in a 23-day production deployment involving approximately 15K WhatsApp notifications for mobile product discovery. The campaign achieved substantial CTR improvements over traditional WhatsApp recommendation campaigns, with evidence of secondary engagement through message forwarding and sharing. The deployment also generated downstream purchases and GMV impact, demonstrating the practical effectiveness of AI Product Research Agents for proactive customer re-engagement and end-to-end customer journey optimization.

QueryAgent-R1: Bridging Query Generation and Product Retrieval for E-Commerce Query Recommendation

Query recommendation in e-commerce search aims to proactively suggest queries that match users' potential interests. However, existing methods mainly optimize query-level relevance, while neglecting whether the retrieved products align with users' downstream preferences. This mismatch often leads to high query click through rates (CTR) but low product conversion rates (CVR). To bridge this gap, we propose QueryAgent-R1, a memory-augmented agentic framework that improves end-to-end alignment via chain-of-retrieval optimization. Our QueryAgent-R1 grounds query generation in real inventory retrieval, allowing the agent to validate and refine queries based on retrieved products. We also design a consistency reward in the agentic reinforcement learning (RL) process to jointly optimize query relevance and downstream engagement. In addition, we construct a memory abstraction module for efficient user profiling. To support offline evaluation, we construct two datasets based on both proprietary industrial data and public datasets, on which QueryAgent-R1 consistently outperforms strong baselines. Moreover, on a large scale production platform, QueryAgent-R1 improves Query CTR by 2.9% and guided CVR by 3.1% in online A/B tests.

ProductResearch: Training E-Commerce Deep Research Agents via Multi-Agent Synthetic Trajectory Distillation

Large Language Model (LLM)-based agents show promise for e-commerce conversational shopping, yet existing implementations lack the interaction depth and contextual breadth required for complex product research. Meanwhile, the Deep Research paradigm, despite advancing information synthesis in web search, suffers from domain gaps when transferred to e-commerce. We propose ProductResearch, a multi-agent framework that synthesizes high-fidelity, long-horizon tool-use trajectories for training robust e-commerce shopping agents. The framework employs a User Agent to infer nuanced shopping intents from behavioral histories, and a Supervisor Agent that orchestrates iterative collaboration with a Research Agent to generate synthetic trajectories culminating in comprehensive, insightful product research reports. These trajectories are rigorously filtered and distilled through a reflective internalization process that consolidates multi-agent supervisory interactions into coherent single-role training examples, enabling effective fine-tuning of LLM agents for complex shopping inquiries. Extensive experiments show that a compact MoE model fine-tuned on our synthetic data achieves substantial improvements over its base model in response comprehensiveness, research depth, and user-perceived utility, approaching the performance of frontier proprietary deep research systems and establishing multi-agent synthetic trajectory training as an effective and scalable paradigm for enhancing LLM-based shopping assistance.

Shopping with a Platform AI Assistant: Who Adopts, When in the Journey, and What For

This paper provides some of the first large-scale descriptive evidence on how consumers adopt and use platform-embedded shopping AI in e-commerce. Using data on 31 million users of Ctrip, China's largest online travel platform, we study "Wendao," an LLM-based AI assistant integrated into the platform. We document three empirical regularities. First, adoption is highest among older consumers, female users, and highly engaged existing users, reversing the younger, male-dominated profile commonly documented for general-purpose AI tools. Second, AI chat appears in the same broad phase of the purchase journey as traditional search and well before order placement; among journeys containing both chat and search, the most common pattern is interleaving, with users moving back and forth between the two modalities. Third, consumers disproportionately use the assistant for exploratory, hard-to-keyword tasks: attraction queries account for 42% of observed chat requests, and chat intent varies systematically with both the timing of chat relative to search and the category of products later purchased within the same journey. These findings suggest that embedded shopping AI functions less as a substitute for conventional search than as a complementary interface for exploratory product discovery in e-commerce.
