Abstract

Learning-based global point cloud registration has achieved remarkable progress, yet its reliance on geometric representations makes existing methods sensitive to variations in point density, scan pattern, viewpoint, and sensor characteristics. We propose CVSD-Reg, a robust global LiDAR registration framework that distills visual semantic priors from a vision foundation model into LiDAR representations. In Stage 1, a Point Transformer V3 student learns from a frozen DINOv2 teacher through contrastive distillation and spherical-manifold alignment, which preserves the hyperspherical geometry of the teacher embedding space. Self-supervised InfoNCE consistency and soft SE(3)\mathrm{SE}(3) invariance further encourage viewpoint-robust descriptors. In Stage 2, the distilled representation is adapted to registration through correspondence learning, density-aware point-dropout augmentation, and end-to-end pose optimization. With a single checkpoint, CVSD-Reg generalizes to both single-sensor and zero-shot cross-sensor scenarios without sensor-specific adaptation and remains entirely camera-free at inference. On KITTI, nuScenes, and HeLiPR, CVSD-Reg achieves strict success rate ([email protected],m/1∘1^\circ) of 97.7%\%, 99.0%\%, and 99.3%\%, respectively, including 97.3%\% on sparse 16-beam Velodyne scans. It outperforms state-of-the-art geometric registration methods by up to 44.0 percentage points without requiring camera inputs or post-hoc ICP refinement.

Unsupervised Point Cloud Registration via Training-Time Semantic Guidance

Unsupervised registration of large-scale LiDAR point clouds remains challenging due to the geometric ambiguity inherent in outdoor scenes, which degrades pseudo-label quality and leads to suboptimal convergence, particularly for sparse, low-resolution scans such as those from nuScenes. We reveal that registration models intrinsically encode semantic awareness that strongly correlates with registration accuracy, albeit without explicit semantic supervision. However, this native awareness is fragile: noisy supervision arising from geometric ambiguity in unsupervised settings rapidly erodes the learned semantic structure, causing performance collapse. To this end, we propose CAESAR, a teacher-student framework guided by an off-the-shelf 3D segmentation model exclusively during training. We observe that potential inlier matches are often buried just beneath a few spurious neighbors in the noisy feature space, motivating Dual-Cue Guided Re-Matching to recover them through reselection rather than simply rejecting. Building on this, a train-only Semantic-Geometric Label Mining performs lightweight, batch-specific teacher refinement and mines reliable pseudo-labels under semantic guidance. We further introduce Semantic Predictive Distillation to consolidate the student's semantic awareness in the feature space. Extensive experiments on KITTI and nuScenes demonstrate state-of-the-art performance, with pronounced gains on the challenging nuScenes benchmark. Crucially, CAESAR incurs zero inference overhead and requires no semantic annotations on the registration data. Code will be released.

ZIL: Zero-shot Image-to-LiDAR Registration

Image-to-LiDAR registration estimates the camera pose of an image with respect to a LiDAR point cloud. It has diverse applications in autonomous driving, robot navigation etc. However, state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods still 1) mostly assume same-frame inputs, struggling with the image and point cloud from distant frames; 2) rely on domain-specific training, failing to generalize to unseen scenarios. We propose ZIL, the first foundation model for zero-shot non-synchronized image-to-LiDAR registration. ZIL encodes the input image and point cloud with the Vision and Point Transformers. In addition to regressing the relative pose, ZIL also learns to predict 3D coordinates, which substantially improves the pose accuracy without additional annotations. Interestingly, naive mix-data training cannot enable zero-shot generalization, which requires normalization on both camera intrinsics and the LiDAR vertical-axis origin. Trained on 7 public datasets with 1.4M LiDAR frames, ZIL consistently and significantly outperforms previous SOTA with a single model across 5 in-domain and zero-shot benchmarks, reducing the translation and rotation errors by up to 87% and 76% (shown in Fig. 1). C-GenReg: Training-Free 3D Point Cloud Registration by Multi-View-Consistent Geometry-to-Image Generation with Probabilistic Modalities Fusion

We introduce C-GenReg, a training-free framework for 3D point cloud registration that leverages the complementary strengths of world-scale generative priors and registration-oriented Vision Foundation Models (VFMs). Current learning-based 3D point cloud registration methods struggle to generalize across sensing modalities, sampling differences, and environments. Hence, C-GenReg augments the geometric point cloud registration branch by transferring the matching problem into an auxiliary image domain, where VFMs excel, using a World Foundation Model to synthesize multi-view-consistent RGB representations from the input geometry. This generative transfer, preserves spatial coherence across source and target views without any fine-tuning. From these generated views, a VFM pretrained for finding dense correspondences extracts matches. The resulting pixel correspondences are lifted back to 3D via the original depth maps. To further enhance robustness, we introduce a "Match-then-Fuse" probabilistic cold-fusion scheme that combines two independent correspondence posteriors, that of the generated-RGB branch with that of the raw geometric branch. This principled fusion preserves each modality inductive bias and provides calibrated confidence without any additional learning. C-GenReg is zero-shot and plug-and-play: all modules are pretrained and operate without fine-tuning. Extensive experiments on indoor (3DMatch, ScanNet) and outdoor (Waymo) benchmarks demonstrate strong zero-shot performance and superior cross-domain generalization. For the first time, we demonstrate a generative registration framework that operates successfully on real outdoor LiDAR data, where no imagery data is available.
