Abstract

Recovering 3D digital humans from a single 2D image is an ill-posed computer vision problem due to the loss of depth information. Probabilistic 3D human pose estimation compensates for this by estimating a set of 3D hypotheses from a prior distribution via generative models. However, most prior work focuses only on 3D keypoints, which often leads to implausible poses that are difficult to apply to downstream tasks, e.g. animation or digital humans. SMPL-based methods are more scalable thanks to the explicit body priors, but it requires more complex modeling of the generation process due to the non-additive nature of the joint rotations. In this work, we propose a novel approach for probabilistic 3D humans using quaternion-constrained continuous normalizing flows conditioned on 2D pose estimations. Our proposed quaternion flows show significant advantages over approaches using other rotation representations. Experiments demonstrate state-of-the-art results of our method on Human3.6M, particularly in ambiguous settings, and comparable pose estimation accuracy on challenging 3DPW and EMDB benchmarks.

HYPERPOSE: Hyperbolic Kinematic Phase-Space Attention for 3D Human Pose Estimation

We introduce HYPERPOSE, a novel 3D human pose estimation framework that performs spatio-temporal reasoning entirely within the Lorentz model of hyperbolic space Hd\mathbb{H}^d to natively preserve the hierarchical tree topology of the human skeleton. Current state-of-the-art pose estimators aim to capture complex joint dynamics by relying on transformers and graph convolutional networks. Since these architectures operate exclusively in Euclidean space which fundamentally mismatches the inherent tree structure of the human body, these methods inevitably suffer from exponential volume distortion and struggle to maintain structural coherence. To this end, we depart from flat spaces and aim to improve geometric fidelity with Hyperbolic Kinematic Phase-Space Attention (HKPSA), natively embedding complex joint relationships without distortion, alongside a multi-scale windowed hyperbolic attention mechanism that efficiently models temporal dynamics in O(TW)O(TW) complexity. Furthermore, to overcome the well-known instability of training non-Euclidean manifolds, HYPERPOSE introduces a novel Riemannian loss suite and an uncertainty-weighted curriculum, enforcing physical geodesic constraints like bone length and velocity consistency. Extensive evaluations on the Human3.6M and MPI-INF-3DHP datasets demonstrate that HYPERPOSE achieves state-of-the-art structural and temporal coherence, significantly reducing both volume distortion and velocity error, while establishing new state-of-the-art benchmarks in overall positional accuracy.

Unsupervised 3D Human Pose Estimation via Conditional Multi-view Ancestral Sampling

We propose a method of estimating a 3D human pose from a single view without 3D supervision. The key to our method is to leverage the 2D diffusion priors of motion diffusion models (MDMs) pre-trained on large 2D human pose datasets. Specifically, we extend multi-view ancestral sampling of diffusion models to the task of 2D-3D lifting of human pose. To this end, we newly propose a conditional multi-view ancestral sampling (cMAS) that optimizes the 3D pose such that its multi-view projections follow the manifold in 2D MDM noise space, while conditioning the 3D pose to match the given 2D poses and anatomical constraints of humans. Experiments on the Yoga dataset demonstrate that our method achieves better cross-domain performance compared to state-of-the-art supervised and unsupervised 3D pose estimation methods, including extreme human poses where 3D supervision is unavailable. DisPOSE: Projected Polystochastic Diffusion for Self-Supervised Multi-View 3D Human Pose Estimation

Recovering 3D human poses for multiple individuals from different camera views is a fundamental bottleneck for analyzing interacting behaviors. Existing self-supervised approaches leverage synthetic catalogues of 3D poses; however, this leads to poor generalization in real-world scenarios due to distribution shifts. We therefore introduce DisPOSE, a self-supervised framework that approximates the inherently discrete multi-view person-assignment problem as a generative diffusion process over the space of polystochastic tensors. By employing differentiable Sinkhorn projections during denoising, our model learns to guide solutions toward valid and feasible assignments based on 2D image priors. The complete 3D skeletons of localized individuals are then regressed using a Hypergraph-Convolutional Decoder that explicitly models relational structures and articulated joints across multiple views. The proposed approach outperforms current state-of-the-art self-supervised methods on standard datasets and demonstrates strong performance on a newly proposed benchmark featuring highly occluded scenes from surgical operating rooms. Our diffusion-based localization demonstrates high label efficiency, retaining 99% of its performance with only 10% of the pseudo-labels. Notably, disentangling the assignment and root regression components while maintaining differentiability makes DisPOSE nearly agnostic to different camera arrangements.
