Abstract
Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used in advice seeking and decision making that may affect social judgements. Despite stigma's profound effects on people and communities, benchmarks remain scarce. Existing general-domain evaluations typically rely on static prompts and fixed-format tasks, overlooking conversational contexts and audience effects in everyday communication. To address these gaps, we introduce SDARE-Bench, the first scenario-based benchmark evaluating both stigma detection and open-ended response generation in LLMs, comprising 1,138 dyadic queries and 1,388 group dialogue. Empirical results across 8 LLMs consistently demonstrate poor identification of stigma components, especially in group dialogues. In open-ended response generation, stigma expression was substantially higher in group settings than in dyadic, with weaker resistance to stigma and more unrealistic advice. Responses were evaluated using a classifier trained on 1,392 human annotated responses. In constructed group pressure settings, stigma expression rates further increased to a striking average of 97.5%. Our findings identify stigma response as a recurring LLM safety vulnerability, especially in socially complex conversational contexts.
Multilingual studies of social bias in open-ended LLM generation remain limited: most existing benchmarks are English-centric, template-based, or restricted to recognizing pre-specified stereotypes. We introduce StereoTales, a multilingual dataset and evaluation pipeline for systematically studying the emergence of social bias in open-ended LLM generation. The dataset covers 10 languages and 79 socio-demographic attributes, and comprises over 650k stories generated by 23 recent LLMs, each annotated with the socio-demographic profile of the protagonist across 19 dimensions. From these, we apply statistical tests to identify more than 1{,}500 over-represented associations, which we then rate for harmfulness through both a panel of humans (N = 247) and the same LLMs. We report three main findings. \textbf{(i)} Every model we evaluate emits consequential harmful stereotypes in open-ended generation, regardless of size or capabilities, and these associations are largely shared across providers rather than isolated misbehaviors. \textbf{(ii)} Prompt language strongly shapes which stereotypes appear: rather than transferring as a shared set of biases, harmful associations adapt culturally to the prompt language and amplify bias against locally salient protected groups. \textbf{(iii)} Human and LLM harmfulness judgments are broadly aligned (Spearman ρ=0.62), with disagreements concentrating on specific attribute classes rather than specific providers. To support further analyses, we release the evaluation code and the dataset, including model generations, attribute annotations, and harmfulness ratings.

While large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being explored for mental health applications, recent studies reveal that they can exhibit stigma toward individuals with psychological conditions. Existing evaluations of this stigma primarily rely on multiple-choice questions (MCQs), which fail to capture the biases embedded within the models' underlying logic. In this paper, we analyze the intermediate reasoning steps of LLMs to uncover hidden stigmatizing language and the internal rationales driving it. We leverage clinical expertise to categorize common patterns of stigmatizing language directed at individuals with psychological conditions and use this framework to identify and tag problematic statements in LLM reasoning. Furthermore, we rate the severity of these statements, distinguishing between overt prejudice and more subtle, less immediately harmful biases. To broaden the reasoning domain and capture a wider array of patterns, we also extend an existing mental health stigma benchmark by incorporating additional psychological conditions. Our findings demonstrate that evaluating model reasoning not only exposes substantially more stigma than traditional MCQ-based methods but also helps identify the flaws in the LLMs' logic and their understanding of mental health conditions.
Large language models (LLMs) increasingly participate in emotionally sensitive social conversations, where responses may shift from balanced support toward excessive validation or escalatory alignment. Existing sycophancy research primarily focuses on factual agreement and instruction-following settings, leaving culturally grounded conversational sycophancy underexplored. We introduce BenSyc, the first benchmark for studying conversational sycophancy in Bengali social contexts. Starting from 11,840 Reddit posts and 170k comments collected from communities across Bangladesh and West Bengal, we construct a human-validated benchmark with binary labels and a fine-grained five-level taxonomy spanning Invalidation, Neutral, Support, Validation, and Escalation. We evaluate more than 15 open and proprietary LLMs on conversational alignment classification and response generation tasks. Results show that distinguishing empathetic support from reinforcement-oriented validation remains challenging even for frontier instruction-tuned models: the best system achieves only 61.8 Macro-F1 on binary detection and 61.7 Macro-F1 on five-class classification. In generation settings, several models frequently produce strongly validating or escalatory responses in emotionally charged situations. Our findings highlight substantial variation across model families and conversational behaviors, underscoring the importance of culturally grounded multilingual benchmarks for evaluating socially aligned conversational AI systems.
