Abstract

Long-form audio analysis requires systems to localize and integrate evidence distributed across extended recordings. While existing work primarily retrieves semantic content through structured textual representations, many real-world queries depend on acoustic evidence that is better preserved in continuous representations or raw audio. We introduce HARP (Hybrid Audio Retrieval Pipeline), an agentic framework and benchmark for systematically studying retrieval and evidence representations in long-audio analysis. Hybrid retrieval combining keyword and vector search shows the most robust performance. When paired with both metadata and retrieved audio as evidence, average answer accuracy improves by around 10% and rationale accuracy by around 6% over single-modality retrieval and evidence. Fine-grained evaluation shows that answer accuracy alone overestimates system capability and that HARP mostly follows human performance trends across query types. These results highlight the importance of combining structured retrieval with flexible access to audio evidence and evaluating long-audio systems beyond answer accuracy.

Event-Grounded Question Answering over Long Audio via Structured Retrieval

Answering natural-language questions over multi-hour audio requires reliable event recognition, temporal grounding, and efficient retrieval. We present LA-RAG (Long Audio Retrieval-Augmented Generation), a structured framework that converts audio into timestamped event records, stores them in an event database, and answers questions using intent-aware retrieval and LLM-based generation. LA-RAG supports two deployment settings: offline grounding mode, in which long recordings are pre-indexed for low-latency querying, and inference-time grounding mode, which performs query-conditioned grounding over shorter, open-ended clips. We evaluate LA-RAG on controlled 24-hour Home-IoT and Industrial-IoT benchmarks and on CASTELLA-QA, derived from real-world audio recordings. The results demonstrate effective long-audio question answering with low query-time latency after grounding and indexing. They also reveal a substantial gap between event detection and temporal localization in current large audio-language models, while showing that explicit timestamped grounding consistently improves temporal reasoning. These findings establish structured grounding and retrieval as a practical complement to generative audio-language models for deployment-oriented long-audio understanding.

LongAudioSpan: Spanning the Duration and Depth of Audio Comprehension

General audio comprehension now covers speech, sound, and music over durations from seconds to hours, driven by large audio-language models (LALMs) that are increasingly omni-modal. Yet the benchmarks that test them still rely on clips of seconds, where scores saturate and models converge; recent long-form efforts extend duration but evaluate long audio much as short clips are. We introduce LongAudioSpan, a benchmark that spans both duration and depth: it pairs audio from 10 minutes to over 2 hours with 3,240 questions across three cognitive levels, namely perception, understanding, and reasoning. Two paths supply the questions, differing in how question content is sourced and how ground truth is obtained. Native QA extracts questions from the audio's content, posing each as a multiple-choice item and an open-ended one graded by detailed rubrics. Anchor QA instead injects ground truth, planting acoustic anchors into the audio and building a perception-to-reasoning chain scored only to the first error. A fully automated pipeline constructs every item through structured captioning, QA generation, and adversarial critic feedback. Evaluating 12 LALMs on LongAudioSpan, we find the hard part comes before reasoning: distilling a few relevant facts from a long, redundant signal. This difficulty grows with audio length and falls hardest on perception, especially temporal grounding. LongAudioSpan is available at https://huggingface.co/datasets/holvan/LongAudioSpan.

EChO-Agent: Evidence Chain Orchestration Agent for Audio Reasoning

While LALMs show promise on audio question answering, they fail to focus on question-relevant segments of audio and provide a clear, checkable reasoning process when dealing with complex audio reasoning. Reinforcement learning and tool-augmented prompting can help models better relate questions to audio but lack a reliable way to understand, integrate, and self-verify audio segments. To address this gap, we present EChO-Agent, a modular agent framework that reformulates complex audio QA as a planning, tool execution, evidence integration, and answer verification workflow. Experiments on MMAR benchmark show EChO-Agent improves both accuracy and rubric scores over baseline and ablation studies show evidence integration is the key factor.
