Abstract

Building extraction from optical remote sensing (RS) imagery is fundamental to urban mapping, yet existing methods are often dataset-specific and generalize poorly to unseen domains. Their practical use is also limited by insufficient detail recovery and weak geometric regularization, leading to blurred boundaries, irregular shapes, and merged adjacent buildings. To address these issues, we propose UniBuild, a unified building extraction framework for multi-source RGB optical RS imagery. First, a unified multi-dataset training scheme is constructed over heterogeneous RGB optical datasets to learn transferable building representations across sensors and resolutions. Second, a novel detail-preserving HR-DPT decoder is designed to integrate high-level semantic features with high-resolution spatial features, enhancing building detail recovery. Third, geometry-aware regularization is introduced through a structure-tensor-based direction-aware loss for boundary direction consistency and a saddle-aware loss for suppressing false activations in narrow inter-building gaps under low-resolution conditions. We train and evaluate UniBuild on multi-source RGB optical datasets, including 10 public high-resolution datasets and two self-collected low-resolution datasets. Experiments show that UniBuild consistently improves building-region accuracy, boundary sharpness, and adjacent-building separation across diverse datasets. It also generalizes well to unseen domains and supports practical building extraction from RGB optical RS imagery up to 10,m resolution. The predicted masks can be further converted into GIS-compatible building footprints through simple polygonization. The trained model and inference code are released at https://github.com/zhu-xlab/UniBuild.

Building Extraction from Remote Sensing Imagery under Hazy and Low-light Conditions: Benchmark and Baseline

Building extraction from optical Remote Sensing (RS) imagery suffers from performance degradation under real-world hazy and low-light conditions. However, existing optical methods and benchmarks focus primarily on ideal clear-weather conditions. While SAR offers all-weather sensing, its side-looking geometry causes geometric distortions. To address these challenges, we introduce HaLoBuilding, the first optical benchmark specifically designed for building extraction under hazy and low-light conditions. By leveraging a same-scene multitemporal pairing strategy, we ensure pixel-level label alignment and high fidelity even under extreme degradation. Building upon this benchmark, we propose HaLoBuild-Net, a novel end-to-end framework for building extraction in adverse RS scenarios. At its core, we develop a Spatial-Frequency Focus Module (SFFM) to effectively mitigate meteorological interference on building features by coupling large receptive field attention with frequency-aware channel reweighting guided by stable low-frequency anchors. Additionally, a Global Multi-scale Guidance Module (GMGM) provides global semantic constraints to anchor building topologies, while a Mutual-Guided Fusion Module (MGFM) implements bidirectional semantic-spatial calibration to suppress shallow noise and sharpen weather-induced blurred boundaries. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HaLoBuild-Net significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods and conventional cascaded restoration-segmentation paradigms on the HaLoBuilding dataset, while maintaining robust generalization on WHU, INRIA, and LoveDA datasets. PolyBuild: An End-to-End Method for Polygonal Building Contour Extraction from High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images

Extracting building polygon contours from high-resolution remote sensing images is a fundamental task for various mapping applications. However, the presence of varying imaging conditions and complex building structures, makes automatic contour extraction extremely challenging. Mainstream approaches for building extraction often rely on pixel-level segmentation followed by multiple post-processing steps to produce building contour, which can be computationally intensive and prone to errors. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end method named PolyBuild, which can directly extract building vector polygons from high-resolution remote sensing images without the need for any post-processing operations. The proposed method leverages two primary modules: an Initial Contour Generation Module (ICGM) and a Contour Optimization Module (COM). The ICGM is designed to generate an initial building contour by utilizing concatenated sub-region center features for each building instance. It performs simultaneous object detection and initial contour extraction by generating bounding boxes and using the center features of four sub-regions to represent each building. The Contour Optimization Module (COM) further refines the generated building contours by iteratively integrating Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) features and contour positional information in a Transformer-based decoder. The hybrid CNN-Transformer architecture effectively captures both local and global spatial relationships within the building contour, ensuring high-quality boundary delineation. Extensive experiments are conducted on three building datasets to evaluate the performance of PolyBuild. The results demonstrate that PolyBuild significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, including mask-based and contour-based approaches.

PCFootprint: A Large-Scale Dataset and Benchmark for Vectorized Building Footprint Extraction from Aerial LiDAR Point Clouds

Building footprint extraction is a fundamental task in photogrammetry, remote sensing, and computer vision. Recent image-based methods have achieved remarkable progress in extracting vectorized footprints from high-resolution optical imagery. However, optical imagery inherently susceptible to occlusions, perspective distortions, and residual relief displacement, yielding incomplete or misaligned footprint extraction. Furthermore, the lack of explicit elevation information limits its direct applicability to Level of Detail building modeling. In this paper, we present PCFootprint, the first large-scale public dataset for footprint extraction from airborne laser scanning point clouds. PCFootprint comprises \num{33000} tiles derived from the Estonian Land and Spatial Development Board, covering diverse urban and rural landscapes. Each tile spans \qtyproduct{128 x 128}{\m} with systematically aligned vectorized footprints aligned to point clouds. The dataset includes a \num{3000} tiles cross-domain test set for evaluating generalization across geographic regions. We establish comprehensive benchmarks by evaluating mainstream methods. Experimental results reveal significant challenges including high intra-class variance, data imbalance, and noise across complex geospatial environments. We believe PCFootprint will advance future research in building modeling, urban scene understanding, and geospatial analysis.
