GS-PRM: Gaussian Visual Roadmap for Image-Goal Navigation

Authors: Ashraf Siddique, Kyung Min Han, Young J. Kim

Abstract

Image-goal navigation requires a global planner that connects visually specified endpoints while providing observations that a local policy can follow. Three-dimensional Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) provides map-registered RGB, opacity, and depth renderings, but does not explicitly encode navigable topology. We introduce GS-PRM, a Gaussian visual roadmap whose milestones, local connections, and visual references are constructed directly through 3DGS rendering without deriving an occupancy grid or signed distance field. We define render-based collision-free (RC-free) configurations and paths. Panoramic depth supplies conservative clearance for milestone validation and adaptive coverage, while edge-aligned orthographic rendering tests the robot's swept volume. We establish conditional soundness and sufficient conditions for deterministic query completeness and probabilistic construction completeness of GS-PRM. To validate the performance of GS-PRM, we conduct experiments in both simulated and real-world environments, demonstrating long-horizon navigation using goal-conditioned policies guided by GS-PRM. Compared with a state-of-the-art 3DGS-based navigation system, our GS-PRM-based navigation system achieves up to a twice higher average success rate and reduces travel time by up to 57.2% when both systems complete the navigation task.

NavArena: Automated Construction of Goal-Oriented Navigation Benchmarks from 3D Gaussian Splatting Reconstructions

Fixed 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) reconstructions provide realistic novel views but lack the traversability constraints, valid goals, and closed-loop protocols required for navigation evaluation. We introduce NavArena, an automated framework that transforms fixed 3DGS reconstructions into benchmarks for goal-oriented visual navigation. NavArena integrates a frozen 3DGS model for egocentric RGB-D rendering, an occupancy costmap derived from Gaussian density and height statistics for reachability and collision queries, and semantic goal candidates lifted from multi-view open-vocabulary masks. These components support the automatic generation and unified closed-loop evaluation of goal-oriented navigation episodes. Across more than 2{,}000 scenes, NavArena generates 22.2 million expert trajectories. Spatial and semantic evaluations assess the derived navigation representations, while policy rollouts demonstrate the diagnostic value of the unified evaluation protocol. NavArena enables scalable and reproducible navigation evaluation on large-scale 3DGS reconstructions, and all benchmark-generation tools, evaluation protocols, and derived assets will be released publicly.

2DGS-Planner: Rasterization-based Path Planning in 2D Gaussian Splatting Map

Gaussian splatting provides an explicit and efficiently rasterizable scene representation for robot navigation. However, individual Gaussian primitives may not reliably represent obstacles as they are jointly optimized through alpha-composited rendering from a finite set of reconstruction views. We propose 2DGS-Planner, a path planner for ground robots that reads planning-relevant geometry from a 2D Gaussian splatting (2DGS) map through rasterization, rather than treating individual Gaussian primitives as obstacles. During offline roadmap construction, multi-view attribution converts rendered normal dispersion into structural scores for non-ground disks supported by the reconstruction views. These scores guide adaptive node sampling on the ground. Path-aligned orthographic queries validate candidate edges, while cylindrical queries estimate local clearance fields that are cached on the edges. During online planning, graph search initializes a route, and path refinement reuses the cached fields while accounting for the robot's dimensions and ground constraints. Experiments demonstrate improved roadmap connectivity, more accurate clearance estimation, and higher planning success compared with the tested baselines. These results support rasterization as an effective geometric query interface for planning directly on Gaussian maps. Code and data are available at https://2dgs-planner.github.io/

AnyImageNav: Any-View Geometry for Precise Last-Meter Image-Goal Navigation

Image Goal Navigation (ImageNav) is evaluated by a coarse success criterion, the agent must stop within 1m of the target, which is sufficient for finding objects but falls short for downstream tasks such as grasping that require precise positioning. We introduce AnyImageNav, a training-free system that pushes ImageNav toward this more demanding setting. Our key insight is that the goal image can be treated as a geometric query: any photo of an object, a hallway, or a room corner can be registered to the agent's observations via dense pixel-level correspondences, enabling recovery of the exact 6-DoF camera pose. Our method realizes this through a semantic-to-geometric cascade: a semantic relevance signal guides exploration and acts as a proximity gate, invoking a 3D multi-view foundation model only when the current view is highly relevant to the goal image; the model then self-certifies its registration in a loop for an accurate recovered pose. Our method sets state-of-the-art navigation success rates on Gibson (93.1%) and HM3D (82.6%), and achieves pose recovery that prior methods do not provide: a position error of 0.27m and heading error of 3.41 degrees on Gibson, and 0.21m / 1.23 degrees on HM3D, a 5-10x improvement over adapted baselines. Our project page: https://yijie21.github.io/ain/
