Activation Patching
Overview
Activation patching replaces a model’s internal states with activations from another run to test which layers, tokens, or components causally affect an output. Researchers use direct and path patching, sequential interventions, and faster attribution-based estimates to trace computations in language models, vision-language models, and other networks. Studies examine tasks such as indirect-object identification, factual recall, multi-step reasoning, and multimodal question answering. A central challenge is that effects depend on interactions and context: a feature may be encoded without influencing the answer, and an intervention may produce the right answer through a mechanism the model would not naturally use.
