AraMIP: Extending MIPVU Towards Metaphor Identification in Arabic

Metaphor research has gained increasing attention due to its relevance to linguistic creativity, language use, cognitive processes, and related areas. While many efforts have been devoted to metaphor identification and annotation in English and other languages, Arabic remains under-resourced in this area. In this work, we propose the Arabic Metaphor Identification Procedure (AraMIP), a novel guideline for Arabic metaphor annotation. AraMIP builds on the widely used Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU) framework, incorporating adaptations that accounts for the language-specific properties of Arabic. We distinguish three major types of Arabic figurative language: Isti'ara (metaphor), kinaya (metonymy/indirect expression), and tashbih (simile), and annotate a pilot dataset of 300 sentences (5277 words). Our analysis reveals key challenges specific to Arabic, including morphological complexity, inconsistencies in dictionary sense ordering, and the absence of standardized contextual materials for annotators. This work contributes a first step toward standardized Arabic figurative instances and facilitates the development of larger annotated resources, thereby supporting future research on figurative language in Arabic.

Wisdom in Unity: The Role of Multilingual Training in Figurative Language Identification in Proverbs

Although multilingual approaches to figurative language identification are not new, the shift beyond language homogeneous training data requires a clearer understanding of the contribution of translated multilingual supervision. We examine this question using 742 proverb concepts across 6,787 translated instances in seven languages. We evaluate five models, including multilingual encoders and instruction tuned LLMs, under progressively increasing levels of multilingual supervision. Moreover, we introduce a multidimensional annotation framework for proverbs that characterizes them through four complementary figurative forms: Metaphorical, Moral/Advisory, Cause-Effect, and Culture Specific. Our findings show that approximately 50% of the translated multilingual training data is sufficient to achieve near-optimal figurative language identification performance. We further show that combining diverse figurative forms yields the strongest overall performance. A notable finding is that the least frequent figurative form, Culture Specific, exhibits the largest performance gains under multilingual supervision. Furthermore, the Moral/Advisory and Culture Specific forms contribute most to the performance of instruction-tuned LLMs on figurative language identification. These findings motivate multilingual figurative language identification to move beyond metaphor-centric taxonomies toward concept level multidimensional frameworks that explicitly model complementary forms of figurative meaning.

Easy to Complete, Hard to Choose: Investigating LLM Performance on the ProverbIT Benchmark

Large Language Models (LLMs) have transformed computational linguistics and achieved remarkable performance across numerous natural language processing tasks, yet significant gaps persist in understanding how these systems process culturally embedded linguistic expressions. This paper introduces ProverbIT, a novel Italian benchmark comprising 100 multiple-choice questions designed to evaluate LLMs' ability to complete Italian proverbs. We assess 13 frontier models, including Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) and traditional LLMs, across three tasks: proverb completion, multiple-choice selection with correct answers, and multiple-choice selection without correct answers. Our evaluation reveals surprising results: while nearly all models demonstrate knowledge of the proverbs through successful completion tasks, performance drops dramatically when transitioning to multiple-choice formats without correct answers, with even state-of-the-art reasoning models showing substantial degradation. Through detailed Chain-of-Thought analysis of two LRMs, we uncover that models exhibit a strong bias toward selecting literal synonyms and frequently mention correct proverb endings during reasoning without successfully identifying their absence from the given options. These findings suggest that current LLMs rely heavily on memorized patterns rather than deeper semantic understanding of culturally grounded expressions, highlighting important limitations in their reasoning capabilities for figurative language comprehension.

VIVID: A Culturally Grounded Benchmark Exposing the Figurative Language Gap in Vietnamese NLP

We present VIVID (Vietnamese Idioms for Validation and Interpretation Depth), the first systematic benchmark for evaluating culturally grounded figurative language understanding in Vietnamese. VIVID comprises 1,636 idioms and proverbs annotated with five complexity traits (literal expressions, pragmatic nuances, Sino-Vietnamese terms, uncommon vocabulary, folk knowledge) and seven semantic themes. We establish an evaluation framework combining generative and discriminative tasks, proposing an LLM-as-a-Judge approach with aspect-based prompting validated against human judgment (Cohen's kappa = 0.792). Evaluating eight state-of-the-art models reveals critical gaps: Vietnamese-specialized models drastically underperform multilingual systems (VinaLLaMA-7B: 0.13 vs. GPT-4o: 2.46), and even top models achieve less than 50% of maximum scores. Notably, few-shot prompting does not universally improve performance, with GPT-4o exhibiting degradation due to stylistic overfitting. Our analysis exposes systematic failures including literal over-interpretation, lexical gaps, and pragmatic flattening, demonstrating that current models lack cultural competence for nuanced figurative interpretation. VIVID provides an essential tool for advancing figurative language understanding in culturally rich contexts.

Conceptual Networks for Cross-Linguistic Idiomatic Expressions: A Feature-Based Graph Approach

We present an interpretable network-based framework for representing idiomatic and figurative meaning across eight typologically diverse languages, totaling 160 conventional expressions, the large majority of which are idiomatic. Each expression is annotated with binary conceptual features (containment, concealment, emotional, social, etc.) derived from cognitive-linguistic theory, and pairwise Jaccard similarities define a weighted graph. Community detection reveals that idioms cluster by conceptual schema rather than by language, producing a structure consistent with cognitive-linguistic predictions. The conceptual network captures unique semantic information not present in distributional embeddings, can be scaled via automatic annotation with LLMs, improves downstream idiom detection, and remains robust when enriched with corpus frequencies. Cross-lingual transfer experiments show that conceptual proximity alone can identify acceptable translation equivalents across five language families, with substantial gains over embedding-based baselines. Ablation studies demonstrate that all three feature dimensions -- schemas, roles, and valence -- contribute non-redundantly to both the network's organizational properties and its performance on idiom detection, and that specific graph-derived signals (community membership, neighbor similarity) are particularly informative. The framework offers an interpretable, cross-linguistically stable representation of idiomatic meaning, combining theoretical grounding with practical utility.

As Easy as Rocket Science: Assessing the Ability of Large Language Models to Interpret Negation in Figurative Language

Figurative language and negation are two areas that challenge current language models, however, both are widely used throughout written and spoken language. Large language models (LLMs) are also widely used in everyday contexts where they cannot necessarily be tuned for a specific dataset. It is therefore essential to understand the ability of LLMs to correctly interpret text that includes both negation and figurative language. To investigate this, we develop a set of new annotations to an existing dataset of figurative language, and test a range of language models on the dataset. We find that the combination of negation and figurativeness can present a particular challenge, and that performance overall and across different negation types is particularly dependent on the prompt style used.

Robust Dual-Signal Fusion: Hybrid Neuro-Symbolic Gating with Compressed Chain-of-Thought Refinement for Irony Detection in Social Media Texts

Small-scale Large Language Models (LLMs) natively default to literal semantic interpretations, making few-shot irony detection a persistent challenge in noisy, user-generated text. In this study, we show that, despite this limitation, inference from compact LLMs can still be effectively harnessed for this task. We introduce the Robust Dual-Signal (RDS) Fusion framework, a hybrid neuro-symbolic architecture that utilizes a compressed Chain-of-Thought (CoT) of an LLM, alongside a static, pretrained RoBERTa and a symbolic prior module in two downstream fusions. RDS Fusion demonstrates better performance than an unrestricted reasoning ablation, while requiring substantially lower inference time. We also find that in our experiments, unrestricted reasoning does not yield better results than restricted reasoning. Evaluated on a strictly held-out TweetEval test set (N=734N=734), RDS Fusion achieves 78.1%78.1\% accuracy and a Macro F1 of 0.7770.777, which is comparable to a finetuned BERTweet-base. On the heavily imbalanced iSarcasm dataset, the frozen CoT pipeline suppresses 22.5%22.5\% of baseline false positives, yielding a Macro F1 of 0.67260.6726 and Ironic F1 of 0.48210.4821, outperforming multiple heavily supervised SemEval transformer ensembles. Paired McNemar's tests show that, while adding the symbolic prior to the neural baseline yields an insignificant gain, and the RDS Fusion is statistically insignificant compared to the combined RoBERTa and symbolic prior ablation; the concurrent fusion achieves a statistically significant improvement over the standalone baseline (p=0.005p=0.005).

FigSIM: A Dataset for Fine-grained Suicide Severity and Figurative Language in Suicide Memes

Suicide memes are memes used to express suicide-related thoughts or comment on suicide-related issues. Suicide memes are increasingly common on social media, yet remain poorly understood and potentially harmful. There is an urgent need to better understand their characteristics and to develop appropriate content moderation strategies that limits users' exposure to potentially harmful content. Currently, the absence of annotated datasets of suicide memes remains a key barrier to developing and evaluating automated moderation approaches. In this paper, we introduce FigSIM, the first dataset designed for fine-grained analysis of suicide memes. The dataset consists of 1049 memes, each annotated for (1) fine-grained suicide severity levels, (2) figurative phenomena (e.g., metaphors), and (3) suicide-related content (e.g., suicide method depiction). We benchmark 16 unimodal and multimodal models across three tasks: figurative language, suicide severity, and suicide-related content detection. Overall, FigSIM demonstrates that suicide memes pose unique challenges for both modeling and content moderation. Analysis revealed biases, such as underprediction of higher suicide severity levels, especially for figurative memes. The dataset (including splits used for analyses) is publicly available. Cross-Lingual Steering for Figurative Language Generation

Multilingual large language models can generate figurative language, but whether the internal signals driving this behavior are language-specific or reusable across languages is unclear. Using activation steering as a probe, we estimate a direction for a figurative category from figurative--literal activation differences in one language and apply it during generation. Across five figurative categories, six languages, and four multilingual LLMs, these directions steer reliably within their own language, most robustly for metaphor and simile. More importantly, they transfer across languages: a direction learned in one increases the target behavior when applied to another, with German among the most receptive targets. Going further, directions assembled from other languages can match or even surpass a target language's own native direction, while removing this shared component weakens native steering. Together, these results provide direct evidence of a reusable but target-dependent cross-lingual signal for figurative generation.

IdioLink: Retrieving Meaning Beyond Words Across Idiomatic and Literal Expressions

Idioms pose a fundamental challenge for language models, as their meaning cannot be inferred from surface form alone. Understanding such expressions, therefore, requires semantic abstraction beyond lexical overlap. We introduce IdioLink, a retrieval benchmark designed to test whether models can link idiomatic expressions to conceptually equivalent meanings expressed in literal or paraphrased forms. IdioLink comprises 10,700 documents and 2,140 queries, spanning 107 idioms with both literal and figurative uses. Each document and query is annotated with spans that convey the core meaning. Evaluating strong embedding baselines (e.g., BGE, E5, Contriever, and Qwen), we show that current models struggle to retrieve equivalent meanings across divergent surface realizations, relying instead on topical and shallow semantic cues. IdioLink exposes key gaps in idiom-aware semantic retrieval and provides a challenging testbed for future models.

SiNFluD: Creating and Evaluating Figurative Language Dataset for Sindhi

In this article, we introduce SiNFluD, a novel benchmark dataset for Sindhi figurative language classification. We first collect raw text from various blogs, social media platforms, and literary sources, and subsequently prepare the corpus for annotation. Two native annotators label the data using the Doccano text annotation tool, achieving an inter-annotator agreement of 0.81. We then establish baseline results using 5-fold and 10-fold cross-validation. Finally, we evaluate mBERT, XLM-RoBERTa, and XLM-RoBERTa-XL models, along with SetFit for few-shot fine-tuning of sentence transformers. Among these, the pretrained XLM-RoBERTa-XL achieves the best performance.

Exploring Concreteness Through a Figurative Lens

Static concreteness ratings are widely used in NLP, yet a word's concreteness can shift with context, especially in figurative language such as metaphor, where common concrete nouns can take abstract interpretations. While such shifts are evident from context, it remains unclear how LLMs understand concreteness internally. We conduct a layer-wise and geometric analysis of LLM hidden representations across four model families, examining how models distinguish literal vs figurative uses of the same noun and how concreteness is organized in representation space. We find that LLMs separate literal and figurative usage in early layers, and that mid-to-late layers compress concreteness into a one-dimensional direction that is consistent across models. Finally, we show that this geometric structure is practically useful: a single concreteness direction supports efficient figurative-language classification and enables training-free steering of generation toward more literal or more figurative rewrites.

Evaluating Large Language Models on Urdu Idioms

Idioms remain a persistent challenge in natural language processing due to their figurative and culturally grounded meanings, which distinguish them from literal expressions. Although recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have improved idiom handling across several languages, limited attention has been given to low resource languages such as Urdu. In this work, we present a comprehensive benchmark for Urdu to English idiomatic translation, consisting of a manually verified dataset of 4,000 aligned idiom sentence pairs in both Perso Arabic (native Urdu script) and Romanized Urdu. We evaluate multiple tasks, including translation, paraphrasing, idiom span detection, and back-translation, using diverse prompting strategies such as cultural prompting, idiomatic prompting, and few-shot learning. Our findings show that frontier LLMs consistently outperform traditional neural machine translation systems across all evaluation settings, particularly in preserving figurative and metaphorical meaning. While models demonstrate relatively stable performance on native Urdu script, the absence of standardized orthography in Romanized Urdu introduces substantial challenges for consistency and idiom span detection. This work establishes a high quality benchmark for cross script idiomatic evaluation in Urdu and underscores the importance of prompt engineering in preserving figurative language meaning across languages.
