Temporal Credit Assignment
Overview
Temporal credit assignment studies how learning systems decide which earlier actions, states, or internal steps deserve responsibility for a later reward or error. In reinforcement learning, approaches include eligibility traces, reward shaping and redistribution, stage- or prefix-level comparisons across trajectories, and learned process rewards; in recurrent networks, backpropagation through time and local or reliability-weighted gradient rules carry error across time. These ideas support long-horizon robot and language-agent tasks, sequence forecasting, and stepwise optimization of generated text or video, where outcome labels are sparse and intermediate decisions matter. A central challenge is extending credit far enough to capture delayed causes without amplifying noisy gradients, spurious correlations, or unstable estimates, while validating that assigned credit matches meaningful events.
