Abstract

High-fidelity surface reconstruction from multi-view images is a core problem in 3D computer vision. While neural implicit surfaces like SDFs offer smooth geometry, they are often bottlenecked by the computational intensity of volume rendering. Conversely, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) provides rapid training but lacks geometry continuity, often leading to fragmented surfaces. This paper presents a novel framework that integrates Signed Distance Fields directly into the splatting pipeline. By leveraging the continuous nature of SDFs to regularize Gaussian primitives, our method effectively fills geometric holes and suppresses noise inherent in sparse point clouds. Unlike hybrid approaches that rely on heavy volumetric sampling, our approach utilizes the efficiency of splatting to achieve faster convergence. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that our method produces high-quality surfaces with significantly fewer primitives, offering a more compact and efficient representation for both indoor and outdoor environments.

Gaussian Sculpting: End-to-End Controllable Surface Reconstruction via Field Optimization

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has recently enabled real-time novel view synthesis with impressive quality. However, it struggles to recover accurate surfaces under limited viewpoints and due to the inherent irregularity of Gaussian primitives. The resulting geometric errors are notoriously difficult to correct manually. To address these issues, we propose Gaussian Sculpting, a fully differentiable end-to-end framework for high-quality surface reconstruction. Our key insight is to anchor Gaussians onto an evolving differentiable surface, allowing them to guide signed distance field (SDF) optimization instead of extracting the surface only during post-processing. To enable stable gradient isolation during joint optimization, we design a bi-level training strategy in which the outer loop optimizes the geometry represented by the SDF, while the inner loop updates the Gaussians with the geometry fixed. We further impose constraints on Gaussian parameters to ensure consistency with the underlying surface, thereby improving both geometric and appearance fidelity during optimization. In addition, we introduce a multi-resolution subdivision scheme based on octree-like partitioning to preserve fine details while reducing memory consumption. Experiments on object-level scenes demonstrate that our method effectively removes redundant surfaces, recovers missing structures caused by limited viewpoints, and achieves strong reconstruction quality even at relatively low resolutions.

Sparse-View Surface Reconstruction using Gaussian Splatting through High-Confidence Depth Propagation with Normal Priors

3D reconstruction from sparse views is a challenging task in 3D computer vision. Recent studies on 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) have achieved remarkable results with sparse views in novel view synthesis, yet reconstructing high-quality geometric surfaces from sparse views remains a challenge, due to the limited geometry clues and the discreteness of Gaussians. In this paper, we propose a novel 3DGS-based method for high-fidelity surface reconstruction from sparse views. Our key insight is to introduce a normal-guided depth propagation approach, which can extend depth information from high-confidence regions to constrain the depth in low-confidence areas. Additionally, we propose an abnormal depth edge-aware regularization to address depth discontinuities caused by the discreteness of Gaussians. Extensive experiments on DTU and Tanks-and-Temples datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in sparse view surface reconstruction. Fast 3D Foundation Model Initialized Gaussian Splatting

This paper introduces a fast method for high-quality 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) reconstruction without traditional Structure-from-Motion (SfM). The proposed approach leverages 3D Foundation Models (3DFMs) for camera pose and point-cloud initialization, then jointly optimizes both camera poses and Gaussian primitives using a depth-guided loss function. This enables fast convergence even from rough initialization with as few as 50-60 input views. To further improve reconstruction quality in sparse-view scenarios, an MLP-based pose refinement module is introduced alongside depth-guided supervision from the foundation model. Extensive experiments on Mip-NeRF 360, Tanks and Temples, and RobustNeRF demonstrate that the proposed method achieves competitive reconstruction quality (23.61 dB PSNR, 0.19 LPIPS) while reducing training time to approximately three minutes per scene. The proposed method produces ready-to-use 3DGS models at a fraction of the time required by existing pipelines, making it suitable for near real-time applications in robotics, VR, and autonomous navigation.
