Real-Time Maneuver Planning for Fixed-Wing UAVs in Unsteady Flows Using a GPU-Accelerated Vortex Particle Model

Abstract

Unsteady aerodynamic effects can have a profound impact on aerial vehicle flight performance, especially during agile maneuvers and in complex aerodynamic environments. In this paper, we present a real-time planning and control approach capable of reasoning about unsteady aerodynamics. Our approach relies on a lightweight GPU-accelerated vortex particle model (VPM) and a sampling-based policy optimization strategy capable of leveraging the VPM for predictive reasoning. Through hardware experiments, we show that by replanning with our unsteady aerodynamics model, we can improve the performance of a post-stall fixed-wing perching maneuver in the presence of unsteady environmental flow disturbances.

FlowPilot: Real-Time World-Action Modeling for Agile UAV Navigation

We present FlowPilot, a compact world-action model for real-time onboard UAV navigation from depth. Unlike map-then-optimize pipelines that require local reconstruction or end-to-end policies that lack explicit scene prediction, FlowPilot jointly denoises future depth observations and executable trajectories with flow matching. A dual-stream mixture-of-transformers couples video and action experts through shared attention, allowing future-scene prediction and trajectory generation to inform each other. At deployment, the model runs action-centrically and outputs only a trajectory. To ensure trackability, actions are parameterized as degree-7 Bernstein polynomials: the current state constrains the initial control points, and the network predicts five free control points, yielding C^2-continuous references with closed-form velocity, acceleration and jerk. FlowPilot is trained on a three-level depth pyramid spanning high-throughput simulation, photorealistic simulation, and real onboard data. In closed-loop simulation, it outperforms learning- and optimization-based baselines under increasing clutter and commanded speeds up to 8m/s. On a physical quadrotor, the full perception-to-action pipeline runs in under 18ms on a Jetson Orin NX and reaches 5.5m/s in cluttered indoor and forest environments using only onboard sensing and computation.

Spatio-Temporal Prediction of Unsteady Airfoil Aerodynamics Using Augmented Graph Neural Ordinary Differential Equations with Exogenous Controls

Unsteady aerodynamic phenomena, such as gusts, turbulence, and fluid-structure interactions affect an aircraft during flight. For design, optimisation and certification, it is indispensable to quantify such unsteady aerodynamic effects. Industry-standard computational fluid dynamics methods, such as solving the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations or the linearized frequency domain method, are either computationally expensive or restricted by assumptions like linearity. Once trained, machine learning methods are capable of computing non-linear relationships very fast, making them suitable as surrogate models. By autoregressively applying graph neural networks (GNNs), operating on a discretised spatial domain, spatio-temporal predictions can be made. However, autoregressive GNNs suffer from error accumulation leading to unstable rollouts over time. Here we show that combining GNNs with augmented Neural Ordinary Differential Equations yields temporally stable predictions of the surface forces on a pitching airfoil. We found that our approach, called GNODE, based on Graph Neural Ordinary Differential Equations, provides temporally more stable, spatially smoother, and overall more accurate results than an autoregressive GNN baseline. Tests are conducted on a dataset consisting of a simulations of a pitching airfoil, including transonic shocks, transient behaviour and dynamic non-linearities. Augmenting GNODEs with additional latent dimensions improves the expressivity and accuracy by capturing underlying history effects. The developed method demonstrates an approach that is suitable to model non-linear spatio-temporal systems with exogenous inputs.

Wind-Aware Optimal Trajectory Planning for Efficient Gliding of Fixed-Wing Aerial Systems

Gliding offers small fixed-wing UAVs extended endurance and silent operation but requires accurate energy management, especially under wind disturbances and obstacle constraints. Traditional Total Energy Control Systems based controllers regulate the trade between potential and kinetic energy reactively, often requiring fine-tuning and trim-conditions knowledge. In this work, we shift the regulation to the planning level and present a nonlinear, multi-cost trajectory planner for small UAV gliders. The method generates C3\mathcal{C}^3 continuous trajectories based on Bernstein polynomials, mapped into control commands through differential flatness, and re-planned online to match experimentally derived sink polar curves. A simulated netto variometer is integrated into the optimization to estimate air mass motion, constraining the glide to energy-balanced states. Consecutive gliding trajectories are linked by cruising segments computed through trajectories initialized on Dubins path-based waypoints, enabling hybrid missions that combine powered and unpowered flight. The approach is validated in CFD simulations and real-world experiments with a fixed-wing platform, showing reliable stabilization of sink rate, airspeed, and glide ratio under wind gusts and in presence of obstacles.
