Abstract

Global solvers have emerged as a powerful paradigm for 3D vision, offering certifiable solutions to nonconvex geometric optimization problems traditionally addressed by local or heuristic methods. This survey presents the first systematic review of global solvers in geometric vision, unifying the field through a comprehensive taxonomy of three core paradigms: Branch-and-Bound (BnB), Convex Relaxation (CR), and Graduated Non-Convexity (GNC). We present their theoretical foundations, algorithmic designs, and practical enhancements for robustness and scalability, examining how each addresses the fundamental nonconvexity of geometric estimation problems. Our analysis spans ten core vision tasks, from Wahba problem to bundle adjustment, revealing the optimality-robustness-scalability trade-offs that govern solver selection. We identify critical future directions: scaling algorithms while maintaining guarantees, integrating data-driven priors with certifiable optimization, establishing standardized benchmarks, and addressing societal implications for safety-critical deployment. By consolidating theoretical foundations, practical advances, and broader impacts, this survey provides a unified perspective and roadmap toward certifiable, trustworthy perception for real-world applications. Stable and Scalable Bundle Adjustment of Holistic 3D Structures

Bundle Adjustment (BA) is a cornerstone of 3D computer vision and has benefited from decades of advances in sparse optimization and numerical methods. It was originally developed for jointly optimizing camera intrinsics, poses and sparse 3D points. While extensions incorporate lines and other primitives, integrating richer geometric structures such as parallelism, coplanarity, or wireframes often introduces significantly increased computational cost and reduced numerical stability. In this paper, we propose a unified framework that extends bundle adjustment to jointly optimize geometric features and higher-order relations. We first introduce a taxonomy that distinguishes scalable geometric features with direct 2D measurements (e.g., points and lines), from groups encoding higher-order relations (e.g., coplanarity, parallelism, etc.), where we show that groups can be modeled as camera-like entities within the bundle adjustment framework. Building on this formulation, we propose that both group constraints and cross-feature relations (i.e., point-line associations) can be expressed through 2D reprojection measurements. By formulating group-induced and cross-feature reprojection errors, we preserve the sparsity structure of classical point-based BA under Schur elimination, while avoiding direct 3D regularization that degrades the conditioning and stability. Experiments on both real-world and synthetic datasets demonstrate runtime performance comparable to classical point-only bundle adjustment, while producing significantly richer 3D structures and improved geometric accuracy.

Glob3R: Global Structure-from-Motion with 3D Foundation Models

Recent 3D geometric foundation models, such as VGGT, provide robust feed-forward 3D reconstruction by directly predicting camera poses and 3D scene points from input images. However, their results remain inaccurate, and scaling them to long sequences or large unordered image sets typically requires chunk-wise processing, which can introduce drift and inconsistency. We present Glob3R, a global SfM-style reconstruction built on 3D foundation models. Our key idea is to explicitly optimize feed-forward geometric predictions. To this end, we augment a frozen Pi3X backbone with a lightweight dense matching head that predicts image warps between selected reference frames and neighboring views. These dense warps are converted into sparse but reliable multi-view feature tracks, which provide correspondence constraints for global optimization. We further introduce a keyframe-based sliding-window association strategy that propagates tracks and relative poses across overlapping windows, enabling scalable reconstruction. Finally, we perform global motion averaging and bundle adjustment to refine camera poses, reduce scale inconsistencies, and recover dense scene geometry. Extensive experiments on indoor, outdoor, large-scale driving, and unordered SfM benchmarks demonstrate that Glob3R achieves robust and accurate reconstruction. It consistently improves over feed-forward foundation-model baselines and recent scalable reconstruction methods, while being more robust than classical SfM pipelines. The refined poses also lead to higher-quality neural rendering, validating the benefit of combining foundation-model priors with global geometric optimization. Pano360: Perspective to Panoramic Vision with Geometric Consistency

Prior panorama stitching approaches heavily rely on pairwise feature correspondences and are unable to leverage geometric consistency across multiple views. This leads to severe distortion and misalignment, especially in challenging scenes with weak textures, large parallax, and repetitive patterns. Given that multi-view geometric correspondences can be directly constructed in 3D space, making them more accurate and globally consistent, we extend the 2D alignment task to the 3D photogrammetric space. We adopt a novel transformer-based architecture to achieve 3D awareness and aggregate global information across all views. It directly utilizes camera poses to guide image warping for global alignment in 3D space and employs a multi-feature joint optimization strategy to compute the seams. Additionally, to establish an evaluation benchmark and train our network, we constructed a large-scale dataset of real-world scenes. Extensive experiments show that our method significantly outperforms existing alternatives in alignment accuracy and perceptual quality.
