Abstract

Reading comprehension systems for low-resource languages face significant challenges in handling unanswerable questions. These systems tend to produce unreliable responses when correct answers are absent from context. To solve this problem, we introduce NCTB-QA, a large-scale Bangla question answering dataset comprising 87,805 question-answer pairs extracted from 50 textbooks published by Bangladesh's National Curriculum and Textbook Board. Unlike existing Bangla datasets, NCTB-QA maintains a balanced distribution of answerable (57.25%) and unanswerable (42.75%) questions. NCTB-QA also includes adversarially designed instances containing plausible distractors. We benchmark three transformer-based models (BERT, RoBERTa, ELECTRA) and demonstrate substantial improvements through fine-tuning. BERT achieves 313% relative improvement in F1 score (0.150 to 0.620). Semantic answer quality measured by BERTScore also increases significantly across all models. Our results establish NCTB-QA as a challenging benchmark for Bangla educational question answering. This study demonstrates that domain-specific fine-tuning is critical for robust performance in low-resource settings.

HybridRAG-BN: A Retrieval-Augmented Framework with Fine-Tuned Verification for Bangla KBQA

Knowledge-base question answering (KBQA) systems rely on effective retrieval and reasoning mechanisms to generate accurate answers from external knowledge sources. However, developing reliable KBQA systems for low-resource languages such as Bangla remains challenging due to limited retrieval-focused research, scarce language resources, and difficulties in grounding generated responses in external knowledge. In this work, we propose HybridRAG-BN, a retrieval-augmented framework for Bangla KBQA that integrates hybrid retrieval using BM25 and BGE-M3, answer generation using the GGUF version of Gemma-4-31B-Instruct, and a LoRA-fine-tuned Gemma-4-31B-Instruct model for answer verification and refinement. To further improve robustness, the framework incorporates a post-processing stage that addresses unresolved cases through fallback answer replacement and DuckDuckGo-assisted retrieval. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, achieving token-level F1 scores of 0.71654 and 0.72912 on the public and private leaderboards, respectively, securing first place in the competition.

Semantic Grading of Written Answers in Low-Resource Language Bangla Using a Fine-Tuned Lightweight Language Model

Bangla is among the world's most widely spoken languages, yet it remains underserved in educational NLP research. In many remote and rural regions, access to qualified subject teachers is limited, and written answers are consequently graded largely by hand, restricting timely and consistent feedback. Automatic assessment is challenging because semantically correct responses can vary substantially in surface form. We present a bilingual (Bangla-English) evaluation system designed for low-resource educational settings that prioritizes semantic correctness over lexical overlap. Our approach fine-tunes a lightweight language model to grade each response using the question, reference answer, and student answer, producing a numeric score and concise, context-grounded feedback suitable for classroom deployment. We also construct a synthetic bilingual dataset to enable controlled training and evaluation. Across proprietary and open-source LLMs evaluated under a unified protocol, our QLoRA-tuned Qwen3-8B confirms consistent improvement by producing the most leakage-resistant feedback (RoRa = 0.819) in synthetic evaluation and the strongest agreement with human scores (rho = 0.936, MAE = 0.725) in a dedicated human study.

BengaliMCQ: Automatic Generation and Answer Prediction of Academic Multiple-Choice Questions in a Low-Resource Language

Traditional retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) frameworks process documents without attending to their hierarchical structure, leading to poor performance, especially in low-resource languages such as Bengali. To address this, we propose a structure-aware RAG framework that models Bengali textbooks as hierarchical graphs and uses a contrastively trained graph neural network to retrieve a small set of relevant passages. These passages provide focused context for a large language model, enabling topic-specific multiple-choice question (MCQ) generation and in-domain answer prediction. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework outperforms strong dense retrieval baselines across retrieval metrics, produces more relevant MCQs, and achieves superior answer prediction accuracy.
