Abstract

Real-time, on-device segmentation is critical for latency-sensitive and privacy-aware applications such as smart glasses and Internet-of-Things devices. We introduce PicoSAM3, a lightweight promptable visual segmentation model optimized for edge and in-sensor execution, including deployment on the Sony IMX500 vision sensor. PicoSAM3 has 1.3M parameters and combines a dense CNN architecture with region of interest prompt encoding, Efficient Channel Attention, and knowledge distillation from SAM2 and SAM3. On COCO and LVIS, PicoSAM3 achieves 65.45% and 64.01% mIoU, respectively, outperforming existing SAM-based and edge-oriented baselines at similar or lower complexity. The INT8 quantized model preserves accuracy with negligible degradation while enabling real-time in-sensor inference at 11.82ms latency on the IMX500, fully complying with its memory and operator constraints. Ablation studies show that distillation from large SAM models yields up to +14.5% mIoU improvement over supervised training and demonstrate that high-quality, spatially flexible promptable segmentation is feasible directly at the sensor level.

Eye image segmentation using visual and concept prompts with Segment Anything Model 3 (SAM3)

Previous work has reported that vision foundation models show promising zero-shot performance in eye image segmentation. Here we examine whether the latest iteration of the Segment Anything Model, SAM3, offers better eye image segmentation performance than SAM2, and explore the performance of its new concept (text) prompting mode. Eye image segmentation performance was evaluated using diverse datasets encompassing both high-resolution high-quality videos from a lab environment and the TEyeD dataset consisting of challenging eye videos acquired in the wild. Results show that in most cases SAM3 with either visual or concept prompts did not perform better than SAM2, for both lab and in-the-wild datasets. Since SAM2 not only performed better but was also faster, we conclude that SAM2 remains the best option for eye image segmentation. We provide our adaptation of SAM3's codebase that allows processing videos of arbitrary duration.

GeoSAM-Lite: A Lightweight Foundation Model for Onboard Remote Sensing Segmentation

The deployment of large-scale foundation models like Segment Anything Model (SAM) on resource-constrained Earth observation platforms is hindered by prohibitive computational costs and the domain shift between natural and remote sensing imagery. To address these challenges, we propose Geospatial Segment Anything Model-Lite (GeoSAM-Lite), a lightweight, prompt-free segmentation framework designed for efficient onboard remote sensing segmentation. GeoSAM-Lite incorporates two core innovations: (1) Geospatial-Domain Initialization (Geo-Init), a domain-aware pre-training strategy that distills geospatial priors from a specialized teacher to bridge the domain gap; and (2) Feature Fusion Layers (FFL), which recalibrate spatial features and restore high-frequency boundary cues to overcome the capacity bottlenecks of lightweight backbones. Experiments across representative datasets, with a primary focus on cloud scenarios to evaluate performance under extreme scale variations and complex boundaries, demonstrate that GeoSAM-Lite achieves competitive accuracy while reducing parameters by 92.8% compared to the heavyweight RSAM-Seg. By establishing a superior Pareto frontier between efficiency and fidelity, GeoSAM-Lite offers a practical solution for real-time segmentation on edge devices.

ActiveSAM: Fast and Accurate Open-Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation with Frozen SAM 3

Segment Anything Model 3 (SAM 3) provides a strong frozen backbone for concept-prompted segmentation, but applying it directly to open-vocabulary semantic segmentation (OVSS) is inefficient: full-resolution decoding is typically run over the entire dataset vocabulary, whereas each image contains only a small active subset of classes. We introduce ActiveSAM, a training-free inference framework that turns SAM 3 into an active-vocabulary segmenter. ActiveSAM first canonicalizes and expands class prompts, then uses evidence-proportional grounding to estimate an image-conditioned active set from a low-resolution presence preview. Only retained prompts receive full-resolution mask prediction, using bucketed prompt multiplexing with the frozen SAM 3 decoder. The preview stage uses only class-presence evidence and skips unnecessary segmentation-head computation. To resolve overlapping concept responses, exclusive concept decoding compares each pixel's joint score vector with class signatures estimated once per vocabulary from unlabeled images. ActiveSAM requires no weight updates, no oracle class-presence labels and no per-dataset hyperparameter tuning. Across eight OVSS benchmarks, ActiveSAM improves the speed-accuracy tradeoff of training-free open-vocabulary semantic segmentation, outperforming the current state-of-the-art SegEarth-OV3 by +2.1 mIoU on average while running much faster, with 7.3-12.2x speedups on large-vocabulary datasets. ActiveSAM also achieves the highest accuracy under image corruptions that simulate real-world distribution shift, making it well-suited for deployment in noisy-input domains such as autonomous driving and embodied AI.
