Abstract

Wireless transmission of high-dimensional 3D point clouds (PCs) is increasingly required in industrial collaborative robotics systems. Conventional compression methods prioritize geometric fidelity, although many practical applications ultimately depend on reliable task-level inference rather than exact coordinate reconstruction. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end semantic communication framework for wireless 3D PC transmission and conduct a systematic study of the relationship between geometric reconstruction fidelity and semantic robustness under channel impairments. The proposed architecture jointly supports geometric recovery and object classification from a shared transmitted representation, enabling direct comparison between coordinate-level and task-level sensitivity to noise. Experimental evaluation on a real industrial dataset reveals a pronounced asymmetry: semantic inference remains stable across a broad signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) range even when geometric reconstruction quality degrades significantly. These results demonstrate that reliable task execution does not require high-fidelity geometric recovery and provide design insights for task-oriented wireless perception systems in bandwidth- and power-constrained industrial environments.

Toward Semantic Communication for Real-time Mobile 3D Reconstruction

Real-time mobile 3D reconstruction is fundamental to many emerging applications such as autonomous navigation and digital twin construction, where a moving platform continuously captures an image stream and transmit to a computing server for scene understanding. Unlike offline reconstruction, camera poses and scene geometry are estimated on-the-fly during acquisition, making multi-view consistency a real-time requirement and rendering geometric estimation highly sensitive to communication-induced distortions. Semantic communication (SemCom) transmits compact semantic information, offering a promising way to preserve task-critical data over unreliable links. However, existing designs are optimized at the image or single-view level and without providing explicit reliability information for geometric estimation, limiting their applicability to real-time mobile 3D reconstruction. In this context, we propose a SemCom framework for real-time mobile 3D reconstruction. The framework includes a semantic transceiver that outputs a reconstructed image alongside a pixel-wise confidence map, quantifying the reliability of each region. We further introduce a confidence-guided geometric estimation method, incorporating confidence into RANSAC-based pose initialization and bundle adjustment to reduce the influence of unreliable regions and enhance robustness under noisy channels. Simulations show that, compared to existing SemCom and traditional seperate source and channel coding, our framework maintains high image quality while significantly improving pose estimation accuracy and 3D structural consistency.

SAFT: Sensitivity-Aware Filtering and Transmission for Adaptive 3D Point Cloud Communication over Wireless Channels

Reliable transmission of 3D point clouds over wireless channels is challenging due to time-varying signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and limited bandwidth. This paper introduces sensitivity-aware filtering and transmission (SAFT), a learned transmission framework that integrates a Point-BERT-inspired encoder, a sensitivity-guided token filtering (STF) unit, a quantization block, and an SNR-aware decoder for adaptive reconstruction. Specifically, the STF module assigns token-wise importance scores based on the reconstruction sensitivity of each token under channel perturbation. We further employ a training-only symbol-usage penalty to stabilize the discrete representation, without affecting the transmitted payload. Experiments on ShapeNet, ModelNet40, and 8iVFB show that SAFT improves geometric fidelity (D1/D2 PSNR) compared with a separate source--channel coding pipeline (G-PCC combined with LDPC and QAM) and existing learned baselines, with the largest gains observed in low-SNR regimes, highlighting improved robustness under limited bandwidth.

Semantic Privacy Protection with Utility Preservation for 3D Point Clouds

Point cloud data face serious semantic privacy risks during acquisition, transmission, and cross-institutional sharing. Existing methods mostly rely on geometric perturbation or destructive encryption, which can reduce the recognizability of the original class but often impair downstream usability. This paper proposes a class-transfer-based semantic encryption framework for point clouds, aiming to conceal original class information while preserving task utility and supporting authorized recovery. Specifically, we construct a unified latent space with a shared-backbone Normalizing Flow, and combine LoRA and FiLM to achieve parameter-efficient class-conditional adaptation. We further introduce diffusion-guided flow alignment to regularize the latent distribution, construct an energy-based category transition graph, and obtain an optimal class-transfer table through global matching. Then, a latent-space Neural ODE continuously evolves source-class latents into target-class latents, which are decoded into target-class point clouds through the inverse flow. We adopt attacker-oriented metrics, including New-Class Recognition Rate (NCRR), Original-Class Leakage Rate (OCLR), and Original Label Recovery Rate (OLRR), to evaluate privacy and utility. Experiments on classification and segmentation benchmarks show that the proposed method achieves controllable semantic transformation, effectively reduces original-class semantic leakage, preserves downstream learnability in the protected domain, and supports reliable authorized reconstruction.
