Abstract

As robotic systems increasingly operate in unstructured, cluttered, and previously unseen environments, there is a growing need for manipulators that combine compliance, adaptability, and precise control. This work presents a real-time hybrid rigid-soft continuum manipulator system designed for robust open-world object reaching in such challenging environments. The system integrates vision-based perception and 3D scene reconstruction with shape-aware motion planning to generate safe trajectories. A learning-based controller drives the hybrid arm to arbitrary target poses, leveraging the flexibility of the soft segment while maintaining the precision of the rigid segment. The system operates without environment-specific retraining, enabling direct generalization to new scenes. Extensive real-world experiments demonstrate consistent reaching performance with errors below 2 cm across diverse cluttered setups, highlighting the potential of hybrid manipulators for adaptive and reliable operation in unstructured environments.

RoboNav-Arm: Agentic AI-Driven Navigation and Obstacle Avoidance for Robotic Manipulator in Cluttered Environments

Robotic manipulators operating in unstructured environments face significant challenges in safely executing goal-directed tasks due to dynamic and unforeseen obstacles, while traditional methods rely on prior knowledge or fixed perception pipelines, limiting adaptability. We propose a framework for safe task execution with effective obstacle avoidance. The environment module performs real-time obstacle detection, 3D localization, and ground surface geometry estimation. It then generates a structured semantic report that includes obstacle positions, object geometry and shape, and whether obstacles lie inside, outside, or within critical interaction zones. A central coordination module manages the overall system by handling tool invocation (e.g., memory and MoveIt collision scene updates), facilitating communication between modules, and continuously monitoring task progress until completion. Furthermore, a planning module selects an appropriate motion planning algorithm, such as RRTConnect, RRT*, or BiTRRT, based on the current environment configuration and goal requirements. The trajectory generated by the planner is further analyzed and refined to ensure safe and collision-free task execution. The proposed approach is evaluated in Gazebo Classic , demonstrating robustness in dynamic scenarios.

Watch Your Step: Learning Semantically-Guided Locomotion in Cluttered Environment

Although legged robots demonstrate impressive mobility on rough terrain, using them safely in cluttered environments remains a challenge. A key issue is their inability to avoid stepping on low-lying objects, such as high-cost small devices or cables on flat ground. This limitation arises from a disconnection between high-level semantic understanding and low-level control, combined with errors in elevation maps during real-world operation. To address this, we introduce SemLoco, a Reinforcement Learning (RL) framework designed to avoid obstacles precisely in densely cluttered environments. SemLoco uses a two-stage RL approach that combines both soft and hard constraints. It performs pixel-wise foothold safety inference, which enables more accurate foot placement. Additionally, SemLoco integrates semantic map, allowing it to assign traversability costs instead of relying only on geometric data. SemLoco greatly reduces collisions and improves safety around sensitive objects, enabling reliable navigation in situations where traditional controllers would likely cause damage. Experimental results further show that SemLoco can be effectively applied to more complex, unstructured real-world environments. A demo video can be view at https://youtu.be/FSq-RSmIxOM.

UniManip: Open-World Robotic Manipulation via Agentic Operational Graphs

Achieving general-purpose robotic manipulation requires robots to bridge high-level semantic intent with low-level physical interaction in unstructured environments. However, zero-shot generalization remains challenging: end-to-end Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models often lack the precision required for long-horizon tasks, while traditional hierarchical planners suffer from semantic rigidity under open-world variations. We present UniManip, a unified framework centered on an Agentic Operational Graph (AOG), an explicit cognitive and operational backbone for task orchestration, state tracking, execution verification, and closed-loop failure recovery. High-level semantic intents are grounded into actionable primitives via a physically grounded scene graph that provides geometric affordances, contact-aware interaction parameters, and collision-free trajectory synthesis. By coupling a high-level Agentic Layer for task orchestration with a low-level Scene Layer for dynamic state representation, UniManip continuously aligns abstract planning with geometric constraints, enabling robust execution. Unlike static pipelines, UniManip operates as a dynamic agentic loop: it instantiates object-centric scene graphs from unstructured perception, parameterizes these representations into collision-free trajectories via a safety-aware local planner, and exploits structured memory to autonomously diagnose and recover from execution failures. UniManip achieves state-of-the-art performance on LIBERO-Pro, while extensive real-world experiments demonstrate robust zero-shot generalization across diverse tasks, embodiments, and dexterous hands, outperforming leading VLA models and hierarchical baselines by 22.5% and 25.0% in task success rate, respectively.
