Abstract

Gestures are a natural form of communication between humans and can also be leveraged for human-robot interaction. This work presents a gesture-based user interface for object selection using pointing and click gestures. An experiment with 20 participants evaluates accuracy and selection time, demonstrating the potential for efficient collaboration.

Glance-Say: Multimodal Human-Robot Collaboration and Intent Recognition via Sticky Glance

Gaze and speech are promising interaction modalities for individuals with motor impairments, yet robust intent recognition in multi-object environments remains challenging due to micro-saccades, semantic ambiguity, and viewpoint changes. This paper presents a multimodal interaction framework for assistive robotic manipulation. We propose a sticky-glance algorithm that stabilizes gaze-based intent by jointly accumulating geometric distance and directional evidence, enabling robust real-time target selection and switching. We further introduce Glance-Say, a gaze-speech interaction paradigm in which gaze specifies objects and speech specifies actions, together with a continuous shared-control scheme that provides high-readiness robot motion and human-in-the-loop feedback. Experiments demonstrate a tracking rate of 0.92 for moving targets, selection accuracy of 0.97 for static targets, and reduced task duration. These results indicate improved robustness, efficiency, and usability over representative interaction paradigms.

HumanoidToolBench: Benchmarking Humanoid Tool Use from Selection to Mobile Execution

As robotic hardware and learning methods advance, humanoids need tools to perform tasks beyond their inherent physical limits. Successful tool use requires selecting a suitable tool and coordinating manipulation and, when needed, locomotion to complete the task. Existing benchmarks do not jointly evaluate these capabilities on a humanoid. We introduce HumanoidToolBench, an 18-task benchmark spanning three scenarios, three execution levels, and two tool-set modes, together with ToolBook, a dataset of 3.1k demonstrations collected in simulation and on a real Unitree G1. Evaluation of seven policies in simulation and three on the real robot reveals substantial gaps between selecting a suitable tool and completing the task. Focused GR00T N1.7 probes show reduced selection accuracy on unseen tools and continued task execution under unrelated instructions. Point & Grasp: Flexible Selection of Out-of-Reach Objects Through Probabilistic Cue Integration

Selecting out-of-reach objects is a fundamental task in mixed reality (MR). Existing methods rely on a single cue or deterministically fuse multiple cues, leading to performance degradation when the dominant cue becomes unreliable. In this work, we introduce a probabilistic cue integration framework that enables flexible combination of multiple user-generated cues for intent inference. Inspired by natural grasping behavior, we instantiate the framework with pointing direction and grasp gestures as a new interaction technique, Point&Grasp. To this end, we collect the Out-of-Reach Grasping (ORG) dataset to train a robust likelihood model of the gestural cue, which captures grasping patterns not present in existing in-reach datasets. User studies demonstrate that our selection method with cue integration not only improves accuracy and speed over single-cue baselines, but also remains practically effective compared to state-of-the-art methods across various sources of ambiguity.
