Abstract

Rehabilitation aims to help patients with limited mobility regain their physical abilities through targeted movements, exercises, stimulation, and other therapeutic methods. Recent advances in technology have introduced sensor-based systems into rehabilitation and clinical practices, enabling real-time monitoring and providing accurate feedback on movement accuracy. Among these sensors, LiDAR has demonstrated strong potential, offering key advantages over conventional techniques such as camera-based systems, which raise privacy concerns, and wearable sensors, which can be uncomfortable and prone to errors. In this work, we review the applications of LiDAR in rehabilitation, post-injury care, and hospital environments, focusing on studies published between 2019 and 2025. Studies across several areas have been explored: 3D body scanning and gait analysis with standalone LiDAR, LiDAR mounted on robotic systems for rehabilitation, real-time monitoring and environment scanning for safe navigation, and activity and position recognition. We also analyze processing techniques, particularly learning-based approaches, and support the discussion with statistical analysis, highlighting trends, gaps, and future research opportunities. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive survey dedicated to LiDAR for rehabilitation applications, providing an overview of current methods, AI-based processing techniques, and open challenges.

Bézier Degradation Modeling for LiDAR-based Human Motion Capture

LiDAR-based 3D human motion capture has broad applications in fields such as autonomous driving and robotics, where accurate motion reconstruction is crucial. However, existing methods often struggle with unstable inputs and severe occlusions, leading to jittery or even failed pose predictions. To address these challenges, we propose BMLiCap, a coarse-to-fine framework that models motion using temporally compressible Bézier curves. By reducing control points through a trajectory-preserving strategy, we obtain a coherent and learning-friendly motion representation. To reconstruct human actions from LiDAR point-cloud cues, we design a progressive motion-reconstruction module. Specifically, a Time-scale Motion Transformer (TMT) is introduced to predict motion curves at multiple temporal scales, and a Multi-level Motion Aggregator (MMA) is utilized to adaptively fuse the multi-scale curves to recover detailed, temporally coherent poses, effectively bridging observation gaps caused by occlusions and noise. Across four mainstream benchmarks LiDARHuman26M, FreeMotion, NoiseMotion, and SLOPER4D, BMLiCap achieves state-of-the-art accuracy and temporal continuity in complex scenes, demonstrating its ability to compensate for severe occlusions and reduce prediction jitter.

JEPLO: Joint-Embedding Predictive Learning for LiDAR-Based Legged Locomotion

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) remains less explored than RGB-D sensing for perceptive legged locomotion, and existing LiDAR-based approaches often rely on explicit mapping. We present JEPLO (Joint-Embedding Predictive learning for legged LOcomotion), a single-stage learning framework for mapping-free, LiDAR-based perceptive locomotion for legged robots. We introduce a proprio-exteroceptive JEPA (PE-JEPA) world model to learn predictive egocentric terrain representations from onboard observations, including raw LiDAR scans. A concurrent JEPA-teacher-student (CJTS) pipeline is further proposed to train a locomotion policy informed by JEPA latent representations in simulation using deep reinforcement learning with a simple reward formulation. The framework achieves successful sim-to-real transfer, enabling omnidirectional traversal of diverse terrains, including long staircases and high boxes, with lightweight onboard computation. Evaluations demonstrate greater robustness than existing perceptive locomotion frameworks, particularly under degraded perception caused by occlusion, sparsity and noise. Further analysis validates JEPLO's ability to retain task-relevant information under these challenging conditions. We open-source our implementation, experimental datasets, and hardware setup designs https://github.com/ASIG-X/JEPLO.

3D Reconstruction Techniques in the Manufacturing Domain: Applications, Research Opportunities and Use Cases

This comprehensive review examines the evolution and the current state of the art in three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction techniques in manufacturing applications. The analysis covers both traditional approaches and emerging deep learning methods, showing a critical research gap in unified 3d reconstruction frameworks. Through systematic review of 106 recent publications, we classify reconstruction techniques into three primary categories: data acquisition, point cloud generation, post-processing and applications. Non-contact methods, particularly structured light scanning and stereo vision, have shown significant adoption in manufacturing, with 47% of surveyed applications focusing on quality inspection. The integration of deep learning has enhanced reconstruction accuracy and processing speed, particularly in feature extraction and matching. Key applications span design and development (13%), machining (8%), process (17%), assembly (22%), and quality inspection (40%). While current technologies achieve sub-millimeter accuracy in controlled environments, challenges persist in handling reflective surfaces and dynamic environments. Our findings indicate a trend toward hybrid systems combining multiple sensor types and processing methods to overcome individual limitations. This survey provides a structured framework for understanding current capabilities and future directions in manufacturing-focused 3D reconstruction.
