A Conversational Framework for Human-Robot Collaborative Manipulation with Distributed Generative AI models

Authors: Arash Ghasemzadeh Kakroudi, Roel Pieters

Abstract

This paper presents a distributed conversational framework for human-robot collaborative manipulation that integrates local language and vision-language models (VLMs) with a Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2)-based execution stack. Language understanding, visual grounding, orchestration, and motion execution run as separate ROS 2 nodes, enabling flexible deployment across distributed hardware while maintaining a responsive control loop. From free-form user commands, the system generates structured action requests for pick, place, and handover. It uses a VLM to return image-space targets, which are converted into metric robot-frame goals using depth and calibration. A web dashboard exposes intermediate intent and grounding overlays (pixel, depth, and robot-frame) and requires explicit operator confirmation before any motion is executed. Experiments on a Franka FR3 platform evaluate end-to-end task reliability and latency under increasing working table scene ambiguity and compare alternative LLM/VLM configurations in the same pipeline. Hierarchical Prompting with Dual LLM Modules for Robotic Task and Motion Planning

We present a hierarchical language-driven framework for robotic task and motion planning to improve natural, intuitive human-robot interaction in service and assistance scenarios. The proposed system employs two large language model (LLM) modules: a high-level planning agent and a low-level spatial reasoning sub-module. The primary agent processes natural language commands and generates action sequences using a ReAct-style prompt, interacting with tools for object perception and manipulation (e.g., pick, place, release). For precise spatial placement, such as interpreting "place the mug next to the plate", a separate sub-prompting module handles 3D reasoning based on object geometry and scene layout. The system integrates YOLOX-GDRNet for object detection and pose estimation, along with a motion execution stub. We evaluated the system in 24 test scenarios, ranging from simple spatial commands to high-level instructions and infeasible requests. The system achieved an overall task success rate of 86%.

Replanning Human-Robot Collaborative Tasks with Vision-Language Models via Semantic and Physical Dual-Correction

Human-robot collaborative assembly requires robots to interpret ambiguous corrective instructions while producing physically executable motions. Vision-language models (VLMs) provide semantic reasoning but may select logically inconsistent targets or misjudge execution outcomes. We propose a replanning framework that maps human instructions to Action Target candidates, including grasp poses and tool selections, and combines an Internal Correction Model for pre-execution logical verification with an External Correction Model for post-execution visual verification. The framework integrates VLM reasoning with 6-DoF grasp generation and collision-free trajectory planning. Simulation ablations show configuration-dependent effects: internal correction improves candidate validity, whereas external correction enables recovery for a low-latency VLM but can reduce success when visual verification produces false negatives. Experiments with an upper-body humanoid robot achieved 66.7% success in real-world object fixation, 100% in initial tool selection, and 75.0% in corrective tool selection. These results demonstrate interactive replanning across spatial and semantic collaborative tasks while identifying visual-state verification as a key limitation.

Bridging Semantics and Kinematics: A Modular Framework for Zero-Shot Robotic Manipulation

This paper presents a modular training-free framework for zero-shot, language-guided robotic manipulation in semi-structured environments. The architecture bridges the gap between high-level reasoning and low-level kinematics by decomposing the vision-action pipeline into three stages: visual perception, semantic interpretation, and task execution. To overcome the spatial ambiguity and semantic hallucinations inherent in standard Vision-Language Models (VLMs), the perception module employs FastSAM and Set-of-Mark (SoM) prompting to dynamically generate grounded, alphanumeric visual anchors. The same foundation model then operates purely as a Large Language Model (LLM) to act as a semantic router, translating unconstrained human directives into verifiable, reconfigurable configurations. Finally, these configurations are dynamically parsed by a Task Orchestrator into MoveIt Task Constructor (MTC) to generate collision-free trajectories. The framework is evaluated across two zero-shot experimental setups: unconstrained open-world sequential manipulation and dense relational spatial reasoning, achieving a 62% end-to-end task success rate across both scenarios, demonstrating its capacity to reliably execute complex physical actions without domain-specific training or manual coordinate programming.
