Abstract

UAV swarm for applications, such as indoor inspection, security patrol, and logistics delivery, are often mission-oriented rather than exploration-oriented. In these tasks, UAVs are required to visit task-relevant regions in a prescribed sequence, and such region-level mission information can often be obtained from pre-deployment sketch-map priors, such as floor plans, CAD layouts, or evacuation diagrams. Although these tasks are executed in three-dimensional space, UAVs usually fly within a specific altitude layer or a nearly fixed altitude range on each floor, making mission-level region transitions mainly governed by planar connectivity. Based on these observations, this paper proposes a mission-oriented coordinated navigation framework that exploits sketch-map priors for multi-UAV indoor operations. Onboard observations are used to perform topological alignment, and the aligned prior is fused with online observations to construct a mission-oriented traversability representation. A layered 2D--3D coordinated navigation framework is further developed, where 2D guided path planning generates mission-oriented guide paths and guide-driven 3D trajectory optimization produces dynamically feasible and collision-free trajectories. Simulation and real-world experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework in structured multi-room indoor environments and further demonstrate its coordinated navigation capability under both communication-available and communication-loss conditions. Multi-floor simulation results show the scalability of the system to layered indoor structures.

Explore From Sketch: Accelerating UAV Exploration in Large-scale Environments with Prior Maps

Autonomous exploration with UAVs in large-scale, topologically complex environments often suffers from low efficiency due to suboptimal scheduling and detours. Prior maps (e.g., construction drawings), although usually imprecise and flawed, are readily available in many scenarios and have the potential to provide global structural guidance. This paper presents a novel exploration framework that leverages sparse, unaligned, and even discrepant 2D prior maps for LiDAR-based UAV exploration. First, a robust 2D-3D point cloud registration pipeline is proposed to align LiDAR observations with prior maps. The registration pipeline combines a GeoContext descriptor for single-frame candidate retrieval, a multi-frame verification mechanism for coarse transformation estimation with outlier rejection, and a Scale-ICP algorithm for refinement. The registration module can handle map discrepancies and provide multiple hypotheses when geometric ambiguities arise. To effectively utilize the registration results for exploration planning, we further develop a hierarchical viewpoint planning strategy under localization uncertainties. The hierarchical strategy first spatially attaches local viewpoints to prior guidepoints and adopts a Monte Carlo Tree Search solver to determine their traversal sequence under each registration hypothesis. To mitigate registration uncertainty, a risk-aware selector evaluates prior sequences using confidence-weighted travel risk, and a fixed-endpoint traveling salesman problem is formulated to generate an efficient local coverage path under the selected prior guidance. Benchmark evaluations reveal up to 34.2% improvement in exploration efficiency and 37.9% reduction in flight distance compared to state-of-the-art methods, while extensive simulations and field experiments further demonstrate robustness to prior map incompleteness and deformations.

Shared Voxel-Map-Based Cooperative Indoor UAV Guidance with a Multi-Agent Soft Actor-Critic Controller

This paper presents a cooperative indoor UAV guidance framework that combines a shared voxel-map world model with a multi-agent Soft Actor-Critic (MASAC) controller. Multiple drones fuse 360 LiDAR observations into a common world-frame occupancy map, which is converted into a compact bird's-eye-view (BEV) representation and provided to each agent as an ego-aligned local crop. This integrate-in-world, act-in- ego design enables consistent multi-UAV spatial fusion whilst retaining decentralised continuous control. The policy combines BEV map features, near-field obstacle observations, and compact goal and peer-state information within a centralised-training, decentralised-execution framework. In simulation, the learned controller achieves a 90.3% success rate in corridor navigation, outperforming Astar planning, an artificial potential field controller, and a prior guidance method. To address residual sim-to-real mismatch, the simulation-trained policy is further adapted using offline imitation fine-tuning from real-world data. Real-world experiments in GNSS-denied indoor environments demonstrate stable two-UAV cooperative operation across increasingly chal- lenging obstacle layouts. The results show that shared voxel-map representations provide an effective and scalable spatial substrate for learned cooperative indoor UAV guidance.

AgenticDiffusion: Multi-View Reasoning with View-Conditioned Diffusion Planning for Vision-Based UAV Navigation

Vision-based UAV navigation becomes challenging when navigation targets are distributed across complementary camera views and cannot be reliably observed from a single viewpoint. We propose AgenticDiffusion, an agentic multi-view UAV navigation framework that semantically coordinates first-person-view (FPV) and top-view observations for mission-level navigation. Given a natural-language instruction, AgenticDiffusion identifies the requested targets, selects the most appropriate camera view for each navigation task, determines the corresponding navigation goal, and invokes the appropriate view-conditioned diffusion planner for trajectory generation. The resulting trajectories are executed using Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC). AgenticDiffusion was evaluated in four real-world indoor scenarios, achieving an overall mission success rate of 80% across 40 physical-flight trials. In mixed-visibility scenarios, where the requested targets were distributed across FPV and top-view observations, coordinated multi-view navigation reduced average mission time by 50.8% relative to FPV-only navigation and by 26.8% relative to Top-only navigation. The semantic view-selection mechanism was also robust to lexical variation in target descriptions, achieving 100% accuracy across 66 test cases, compared with 63.64% for a confidence-based view-selection baseline. In a substantially larger Gazebo environment, AgenticDiffusion achieved a 90% mission success rate and completed the multi-stage mission, whereas the FPV-only and Top-only variants were unable to complete all requested navigation tasks.
