Abstract

Floating waste in inland waterways threatens aquatic ecosystems and requires timely monitoring under cluttered, multi-object conditions. Existing aquatic-waste datasets provide limited geographic coverage, sparse multi-instance annotations, and little supervision beyond boxes and labels. Compact vision-language models (VLMs) therefore remain insufficiently evaluated for jointly localizing, classifying, counting, and explaining floating waste. We introduce WADE, a reasoning-annotated benchmark containing 2,167 images from rural Bangladesh, 13,608 bounding boxes, and ten waste categories. Each annotation is associated with class-level recognition rules covering visual cues, likely confusions, and discriminative features. We evaluate six VLMs under zero-shot, two-shot, reasoning-guided, and fine-tuned settings using detection, counting, and hallucination metrics. For resource-efficient adaptation, we jointly fine-tune Qwen3-VL-2B on boxes, labels, and reasoning chains using QLoRA. Fine-tuning increases recall from 0.0248 to 0.2339 and F1 from 0.0257 to 0.2163, while reducing image-level hallucination from 0.6836 to 0.0883. However, over three-quarters of instances remain undetected, establishing WADE as a challenging benchmark for dense floating-waste grounding with compact VLMs.

MARINER: A 3E-Driven Benchmark for Fine-Grained Perception and Complex Reasoning in Open-Water Environments

Fine-grained visual understanding and high-level reasoning in real-world open-water environments remain under-explored due to the lack of dedicated benchmarks. We introduce MARINER, a comprehensive benchmark built under the novel Entity-Environment-Event (3E) paradigm. MARINER contains 16,629 multi-source maritime images with 63 fine-grained vessel categories, diverse adverse environments, and 5 typical dynamic maritime incidents, covering fine-grained classification, object detection, and visual question answering tasks. We conduct extensive evaluations on mainstream Multimodal Large language models (MLLMs) and establish baselines, revealing that even advanced models struggle with fine-grained discrimination and causal reasoning in complex marine scenes. As a dedicated maritime benchmark, MARINER fills the gap of realistic and cognitive-level evaluation for maritime multimodal understanding, and promotes future research on robust vision-language models for open-water applications. MDWD: A Street-Level Dataset for Municipal Solid Waste Detection in Dense Urban Environments

Automated visual monitoring of urban environments is a growing Computer Vision research area, but municipal solid waste detection remains under-represented in dedicated benchmark resources. Existing waste-related datasets predominantly address individual litter detection, aerial imagery, or image-level classification, and none simultaneously provide street-level imagery, instance-level localization, and categorization of domestic waste streams within a structured municipal collection context. This paper introduces the Maltese Domestic Waste Dataset (MDWD), a street-level benchmark comprising 3,697 high-resolution images and 11,461 manually annotated instances across five domestic waste categories representative of Malta's municipal collection system. The dataset captures substantial variation in location, illumination, object scale, occlusion, and urban context. To establish reproducible baselines, a cross-architecture benchmark is conducted across multiple generations of the YOLO family and a transformer-based detector. On the test set, RF-DETR-M achieves the strongest overall performance with an mAP50 of 94.49% and an F1-score of 93.56%, whilst smaller-capacity variants maintain competitive accuracy at substantially reduced parameter counts. These results indicate that MDWD supports effective training across both compact real-time detectors and transformer-based models, establishing a benchmark for future research in vision-based municipal waste monitoring.

FloodReasonBench: Benchmarking VLM Reasoning Segmentation for Embodied Flood Response at the Edge

Reasoning segmentation enables vision-language models (VLMs) to translate mission-relevant language requests into pixel-level visual grounding, offering a natural perception interface for embodied agents. However, existing benchmarks largely focus on generic visual scenes and overlook the domain and resource constraints encountered in flood-response platforms. We present FloodReasonBench, a benchmark for VLM reasoning segmentation for embodied flood response at the edge. At its core, FloodReasonBench introduces FloodResponseSeg, a flood-specific reasoning-segmentation dataset constructed from real-world scenes and response-relevant targets. Beyond task accuracy, the benchmark characterizes reasoning-segmentation pipelines under lightweight visual encoding, hierarchical split inference, and compressed intermediate representations. We observe strong partition-dependent accuracy variation in the generic pre-adaptation setting, while the flood-adapted target-workload design space exhibits a substantially more compact accuracy range across partitions. Evaluation on an NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier further exposes the tradeoffs among reasoning-segmentation accuracy, edge-side latency, energy, and communication footprint, enabling quality-constrained selection of edge operating points. Together, these results provide a task- and system-level characterization of reasoning segmentation for resource-constrained embodied flood response at the edge.
