Abstract

Beyond-visual-range (BVR) air combat is a challenging reinforcement-learning domain characterized by partial observability, long-horizon decision making, energy management, and limited weapons. We present BVR Sim, an open-source Gymnasium-style environment designed for heterogeneous air-combat reinforcement learning. BVR Sim supports multiple JSBSim aircraft models, including the F-15, F-16, F/A-18, and F-22, with configurable weapons, sensors, controllers, and opponents. A unified tactical action interface specifies desired heading, altitude, speed, and weapon release above aircraft-specific inner-loop controllers, enabling policies to operate across heterogeneous platforms. The environment provides interchangeable Python and accelerated C++ backends, entity-oriented observations, compositional rewards, scripted opponents, replay and visualization, and adapters for multi-agent learning frameworks. At a 0.4-s decision interval, the C++ backend achieves 104 simulated seconds per wall-clock second in 1-vs-1 and remains practical through 10-vs-10 scenarios. A policy trained only on the F-16 transfers without retraining to four unseen aircraft, reaching a 45.5% mean win rate with aircraft-specific controller adaptation. MAPPO and HAPPO experiments further verify end-to-end compatibility with standard multi-agent reinforcement-learning pipelines.

FALCON-S: Fixed-wing ground-effect Aerodynamics Simulator and Flight Control Learning Suite

We present a modular, high-fidelity simulation framework for the development and benchmarking of flight control strategies in fixed-wing aerial robots operating near the ground. Unlike existing simulators that rely on simplified or hover-oriented dynamics, our framework models full 6DoF rigid-body physics, semi-empirical ground-effect aerodynamics, actuator dynamics, sensor noise, and environmental disturbances. This physical realism, combined with modular component design, enables systematic analysis of low-altitude flight behavior under realistic conditions. The simulator supports both CPU and GPU backends via Torch and NVIDIA Warp, enabling high-throughput parallel execution suitable for large-scale reinforcement learning training and optimal control rollouts. A unified interface accommodates a range of controllers (both RL and optical control algorithms) across tasks such as altitude regulation and trajectory tracking. Cross-validation with X-Plane and JSBSim is also supported to facilitate engineering integration and visual fidelity.

MuJoCo-Drones-Gym: A GPU-Accelerated Multi-Drone Simulator for Control and Reinforcement Learning

Robotic simulators are a cornerstone of modern research in aerial robotics, serving both as a vehicle for the development of new control algorithms and as the data source for training reinforcement learning (RL) policies. Yet, existing quadcopter learning environments often face a trade-off between physical fidelity, multi-agent support, and the throughput required by modern deep RL pipelines. In this paper, we present MuJoCo-Drones-Gym, an open-source Gymnasium-compatible multi-drone environment built on top of the MuJoCo physics engine. MuJoCo-Drones-Gym supports an arbitrary number of Bitcraze Crazyflie 2.x nano-quadcopters and exposes a modular API for selecting (i)~the physics model (rigid-body MuJoCo, explicit Python dynamics, or any subset of ground effect, blade drag, and inter-drone downwash), (ii)~the action interface (per-motor RPMs, collective normalized thrust, velocity setpoints, or PID waypoint commands), and (iii)~the observation space (kinematic state vectors, RGB / depth / segmentation cameras, or neighbourhood adjacency information). A PettingZoo ParallelEnv wrapper enables drop-in multi-agent reinforcement learning, while a suite of seven task environments, hover, velocity tracking, multi-drone hover, waypoint navigation, formation flight, gate racing, and a generic multi-agent template, demonstrates the breadth of the interface. We describe the environment design, the underlying physics and quadcopter dynamics, and illustrate its use through control and learning examples that mirror those of the closely related gym-pybullet-drones project, while taking advantage of MuJoCo's improved contact handling, rendering, and parallelizability.

CARLA-Air: Fly Drones Inside a CARLA World -- A Unified Infrastructure for Air-Ground Embodied Intelligence

The convergence of low-altitude economies, embodied intelligence, and air-ground cooperative systems creates growing demand for simulation infrastructure capable of jointly modeling aerial and ground agents within a single physically coherent environment. Existing open-source platforms remain domain-segregated: driving simulators lack aerial dynamics, while multirotor simulators lack realistic ground scenes. Bridge-based co-simulation introduces synchronization overhead and cannot guarantee strict spatial-temporal consistency. We present CARLA-Air, an open-source infrastructure that unifies high-fidelity urban driving and physics-accurate multirotor flight within a single Unreal Engine process. The platform preserves both CARLA and AirSim native Python APIs and ROS 2 interfaces, enabling zero-modification code reuse. Within a shared physics tick and rendering pipeline, CARLA-Air delivers photorealistic environments with rule-compliant traffic, socially-aware pedestrians, and aerodynamically consistent UAV dynamics, synchronously capturing up to 18 sensor modalities across all platforms at each tick. The platform supports representative air-ground embodied intelligence workloads spanning cooperation, embodied navigation and vision-language action, multi-modal perception and dataset construction, and reinforcement-learning-based policy training. An extensible asset pipeline allows integration of custom robot platforms into the shared world. By inheriting AirSim's aerial capabilities -- whose upstream development has been archived -- CARLA-Air ensures this widely adopted flight stack continues to evolve within a modern infrastructure.
