Abstract

Oralscan image segmentation is essential for computer-aided diagnosis and treatment planning in digital dentistry. However, existing visual state space models (SSMs) often rely on manually designed scanning orders to flatten image patches into sequences, which disrupts the semantic spatial continuity and hinders coherent feature extraction from key foreground regions. Moreover, elements such as inconsistent lighting, reflective surfaces, and noise during data acquisition disrupt the frequency distribution by diminishing high-frequency details while enhancing low-frequency components, consequently hindering the accurate localization of boundaries. In response to these challenges, we introduce FU-Mamba, an innovative framework that incorporates dynamic scanning and frequency domain enhancement within the SSM architecture. Specifically, the Dynamic Mamba Block (DMB) adaptively learns sampling offsets via a trainable offset prediction network and performs flexible bilinear interpolation, enabling content-aware scanning that preserves spatial coherence. Furthermore, a frequency domain enhancement block balances spectral components through wavelet-guided decomposition and spectrum pooling, improving robustness under adverse imaging conditions. Experimental findings indicate that FU-Mamba attains a notable enhancement in segmentation accuracy, evidenced by a 1.1% increase in the mean intersection over union (mIoU) metric when evaluated on the dental segmentation dataset. Innovative Tooth Segmentation Using Hierarchical Features and Bidirectional Sequence Modeling

Tooth image segmentation is a cornerstone of dental digitization. However, traditional image encoders relying on fixed-resolution feature maps often lead to discontinuous segmentation and poor discrimination between target regions and background, due to insufficient modeling of environmental and global context. Moreover, transformer-based self-attention introduces substantial computational overhead because of its quadratic complexity (O(n^2)), making it inefficient for high-resolution dental images. To address these challenges, we introduce a three-stage encoder with hierarchical feature representation to capture scale-adaptive information in dental images. By jointly leveraging low-level details and high-level semantics through cross-scale feature fusion, the model effectively preserves fine structural information while maintaining strong contextual awareness. Furthermore, a bidirectional sequence modeling strategy is incorporated to enhance global spatial context understanding without incurring high computational cost. We validate our method on two dental datasets, with experimental results demonstrating its superiority over existing approaches. On the OralVision dataset, our model achieves a 1.1% improvement in mean intersection over union (mIoU).

MATHENA: Mamba-based Architectural Tooth Hierarchical Estimator and Holistic Evaluation Network for Anatomy

Dental diagnosis from Orthopantomograms (OPGs) requires coordination of tooth detection, caries segmentation (CarSeg), anomaly detection (AD), and dental developmental staging (DDS). We propose Mamba-based Architectural Tooth Hierarchical Estimator and Holistic Evaluation Network for Anatomy (MATHENA), a unified framework leveraging Mamba's linear-complexity State Space Models (SSM) to address all four tasks. MATHENA integrates MATHE, a multi-resolution SSM-driven detector with four-directional Vision State Space (VSS) blocks for O(N) global context modeling, generating per-tooth crops. These crops are processed by HENA, a lightweight Mamba-UNet with a triple-head architecture and Global Context State Token (GCST). In the triple-head architecture, CarSeg is first trained as an upstream task to establish shared representations, which are then frozen and reused for downstream AD fine-tuning and DDS classification via linear probing, enabling stable, efficient learning. We also curate PARTHENON, a benchmark comprising 15,062 annotated instances from ten datasets. MATHENA achieves 93.78% mAP@50 in tooth detection, 90.11% Dice for CarSeg, 88.35% for AD, and 72.40% ACC for DDS.

TopoMamba: Topology-Aware Scanning and Fusion for Segmenting Heterogeneous Medical Visual Media

Visual state-space models (SSMs) have shown strong potential for medical image segmentation, yet their effectiveness is often limited by two practical issues: axis-biased scan ordering weakens the modeling of oblique and curved structures, and naive multi-branch fusion tends to amplify redundant responses. We present TopoMamba, a topology-aware scan-and-fuse framework for segmenting heterogeneous medical visual media. The method combines a diagonal/anti-diagonal TopoA-Scan branch with the standard Cross-Scan branch to provide complementary structural priors, and introduces ScanCache, a device-aware caching mechanism that amortizes explicit scan-index construction across recurring resolutions. To fuse heterogeneous scan features efficiently, we further propose a lightweight HSIC Gate that regulates branch interaction using a dependence-aware scalar gating rule. We also instantiate a volumetric TopoMamba-3D for practical 3D clinical segmentation. Experiments on Synapse CT, ISIC 2017 dermoscopy, and CVC-ClinicDB endoscopy show that TopoMamba consistently improves segmentation quality over strong CNN, Transformer, and SSM baselines, with particularly clear gains on thin or curved targets such as the pancreas and gallbladder, while maintaining favorable deployment efficiency under dynamic input resolutions. These results suggest that topology-aware scan ordering and lightweight dependence-aware fusion form an effective and practical design for medical multimedia segmentation. The code will be made publicly available.
