Abstract

Reliable medical conversational AI requires authentic expert--patient interaction data, yet such datasets remain scarce, especially for low-resource languages such as Bengali. We present DocTalkBN, a large-scale multimodal dataset of real-world expert telemedicine conversations in Bengali, collected from nationally broadcast telemedicine programs featuring board-certified physicians. DocTalkBN contains 557.63 hours of paired audio and text, 1,515 multi-turn patient calls, 10,274 host--doctor question--answer exchanges, totaling 1.7M tokens, spanning 26 medical specialties. Unlike prior resources derived from medical forums, written health content, or synthetic data, our dataset preserves the spontaneity, contextual richness, and spoken characteristics of authentic medical interactions in a low-resource setting. To support benchmark-driven research, we further construct three downstream tasks from the corpus, medical triage classification, advice safety evaluation, and medical named entity recognition, and benchmark a diverse set of large language models and encoder-based baselines. Our results show that DocTalkBN is a practically useful resource, particularly for clinically grounded reasoning tasks. We release this resource to facilitate future research on reliable medical NLP and safer, more culturally grounded healthcare systems for low-resource languages. Our source codes and dataset are publicly available at https://anonymous.4open.science/r/doctalk.

IndicMedDialog: A Parallel Multi-Turn Medical Dialogue Dataset for Accessible Healthcare in Indic Languages

Most existing medical dialogue systems operate in a single-turn question--answering paradigm or rely on template-based datasets, limiting conversational realism and multilingual applicability. We introduce IndicMedDialog, a parallel multi-turn medical dialogue dataset spanning English and nine Indic languages: Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. The dataset extends MDDial with LLM-generated synthetic consultations, translated using TranslateGemma, verified by native speakers, and refined through a script-aware post-processing pipeline to correct phonetic, lexical, and character-spacing errors. Building on this dataset, we fine-tune IndicMedLM via parameter-efficient adaptation of a quantized small language model, incorporating optional patient pre-context to personalise multi-turn symptom elicitation. We evaluate against zero-shot multilingual baselines, conduct systematic error analysis across ten languages, and validate clinical plausibility through medical expert evaluation.

MedAidDialog: A Multilingual Multi-Turn Medical Dialogue Dataset for Accessible Healthcare

Conversational artificial intelligence has the potential to assist users in preliminary medical consultations, particularly in settings where access to healthcare professionals is limited. However, many existing medical dialogue systems operate in a single-turn question--answering paradigm or rely on template-based datasets, limiting conversational realism and multilingual applicability. In this work, we introduce MedAidDialog, a multilingual multi-turn medical dialogue dataset designed to simulate realistic physician--patient consultations. The dataset extends the MDDial corpus by generating synthetic consultations using large language models and further expands them into a parallel multilingual corpus covering seven languages: English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, and Arabic. Building on this dataset, we develop MedAidLM, a conversational medical model trained using parameter-efficient fine-tuning on quantized small language models, enabling deployment without high-end computational infrastructure. Our framework additionally incorporates optional patient pre-context information (e.g., age, gender, allergies) to personalize the consultation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system can effectively perform symptom elicitation through multi-turn dialogue and generate diagnostic recommendations. We further conduct medical expert evaluation to assess the plausibility and coherence of the generated consultations.

A Dataset of Robot-Patient and Doctor-Patient Medical Dialogues for Spoken Language Processing Tasks

Large Language Models (LLMs) have brought huge improvements to Artificial Intelligence (AI), which can be applied to general-purpose tasks. However, their application to textual or spoken medical consultations is still an open research problem. This paper proposes MeDial-Speech, a novel speech dataset for training and evaluating Med-AIs that can carry out consultations with patients. It was collected in realistic environments from robot-patient and doctor-patient dialogues, contains 111+ hours of speech data (without data augmentation), and covers four health conditions: Lewy body dementia, heart failure, shoulder pain, and angina. In addition, we propose a dialogue benchmark via sentence selection (with 20 options) to evaluate three state-of-the-art LLMs: GPT-5 mini, DeepSeek-V3, and Claude Sonnet 4. Experimental results reveal that Claude Sonnet 4 is the best in sentence selection, with 71.1% accuracy using manual transcriptions and 74.7% using automatic transcriptions, and that all LLMs are highly overconfident in their probabilistic predictions, regardless of selecting correct or incorrect sentences in medical dialogues.
