Abstract

Medical question answering (QA) systems have become crucial tools for providing reliable health information. But they remain very unexplored for low-resource languages like Bangla due to limited datasets and systems tailored to these languages. To address this, we introduce BanglaMed-QA, a robust QA system specifically designed for the Bangla medical domain. The process begins with building a structured medical knowledge base that includes 4,493 QA pairs in 9 categories under 506 diseases. To improve semantic comprehension, domain-specific root word dictionaries and synonym sets are proposed, in addition to part-of-speech tagging for anaphora resolution. We adopt supervised machine learning models in which SVM is found to be the best model to categorize questions. Multiple similarity metrics, including cosine, Jaccard, BM25, and Levenshtein, are applied with soft and hard voting methods for query matching. The performance of the QA system has been evaluated in two aspects, with a 95% F1 score in an automated evaluation and an average human satisfaction rating of 0.9 out of 1.0. This validates the real-world application of BanglaMed-QA in closing the healthcare information gap for Bangla speakers.

How Good LLMs Are at Answering Bangla Medical Visual Questions? Dataset and Benchmarking

Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) and Large Vision Language Models (LVLMs) have enabled general-purpose systems to demonstrate promising capabilities in complex reasoning tasks, including those in the medical domain. Medical Visual Question Answering (MedVQA) has particularly benefited from these developments. However, despite Bangla being one of the most widely spoken languages globally, there exists no established MedVQA benchmark for it. To address this gap, we introduce BanglaMedVQA, a dataset comprising clinically validated image-question-answer pairs, along with a comprehensive evaluation of current foundation models on this resource. Consistent with prior findings that report low performance of current models on English MedVQA benchmarks, our analysis reveals that Bangla performance is substantially lower, reflecting the challenges inherent to low-resource languages. Even top-performing models such as Gemini and GPT-4.1 mini fail to accurately answer specialized diagnostic questions, indicating severe limitations in fine-grained medical reasoning. Although certain open-source models, such as Gemma-3, occasionally outperform these models in general categories, they too struggle with clinically complex questions, underscoring the urgent need for top-notch evaluation method.

HybridRAG-BN: A Retrieval-Augmented Framework with Fine-Tuned Verification for Bangla KBQA

Knowledge-base question answering (KBQA) systems rely on effective retrieval and reasoning mechanisms to generate accurate answers from external knowledge sources. However, developing reliable KBQA systems for low-resource languages such as Bangla remains challenging due to limited retrieval-focused research, scarce language resources, and difficulties in grounding generated responses in external knowledge. In this work, we propose HybridRAG-BN, a retrieval-augmented framework for Bangla KBQA that integrates hybrid retrieval using BM25 and BGE-M3, answer generation using the GGUF version of Gemma-4-31B-Instruct, and a LoRA-fine-tuned Gemma-4-31B-Instruct model for answer verification and refinement. To further improve robustness, the framework incorporates a post-processing stage that addresses unresolved cases through fallback answer replacement and DuckDuckGo-assisted retrieval. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, achieving token-level F1 scores of 0.71654 and 0.72912 on the public and private leaderboards, respectively, securing first place in the competition.

NCTB-QA: A Large-Scale Bangla Educational Question Answering Dataset and Benchmarking Performance

Reading comprehension systems for low-resource languages face significant challenges in handling unanswerable questions. These systems tend to produce unreliable responses when correct answers are absent from context. To solve this problem, we introduce NCTB-QA, a large-scale Bangla question answering dataset comprising 87,805 question-answer pairs extracted from 50 textbooks published by Bangladesh's National Curriculum and Textbook Board. Unlike existing Bangla datasets, NCTB-QA maintains a balanced distribution of answerable (57.25%) and unanswerable (42.75%) questions. NCTB-QA also includes adversarially designed instances containing plausible distractors. We benchmark three transformer-based models (BERT, RoBERTa, ELECTRA) and demonstrate substantial improvements through fine-tuning. BERT achieves 313% relative improvement in F1 score (0.150 to 0.620). Semantic answer quality measured by BERTScore also increases significantly across all models. Our results establish NCTB-QA as a challenging benchmark for Bangla educational question answering. This study demonstrates that domain-specific fine-tuning is critical for robust performance in low-resource settings.
