Planning and Scheduling Business Processes under Control-Flow Uncertainty: Extended Version

Authors: Michel KunklerStefanie Rinderle-Ma

Abstract

Scheduling activities in business processes can improve efficiency (e.g., reduce makespan), but is challenging because the exact sequence of activities required to complete a case is often uncertain due to decisions based on data that emerges during execution. Nevertheless, probabilistic information regarding such decisions can often be estimated or derived from historical execution logs, and can help anticipate which execution paths are likely to lead to successful completion. Planning with particular execution paths affects feasibility, i.e., the probability of successful completion, and the expected number of superfluous activities that are planned but never executed. We frame the problem as a chance-constrained optimization problem and present two formulations: A decomposed approach with two stages, a planning stage that minimizes the expected number of superfluous activities subject to a feasibility constraint, and a scheduling stage that minimizes the makespan over the planned activities; and an integrated approach that combines planning and scheduling into a single formulation. Evaluation on two real-world and one synthetic dataset shows that the integrated approach yields superior makespans but is intractable at scale, while the decomposed approach scales to large settings.

On Time, Within Budget: Constraint-Driven Online Resource Allocation for Agentic Workflows

Agentic systems increasingly solve complex user requests by executing orchestrated workflows, where subtasks are assigned to specialized models or tools and coordinated according to their dependencies. While recent work improves agent efficiency by optimizing the performance--cost--latency frontier, real deployments often impose concrete requirements: a workflow must be completed within a specified budget and before a specified deadline. This shifts the goal from average efficiency optimization to maximizing the probability that the entire workflow completes successfully under explicit budget and deadline constraints. We study \emph{constraint-driven online resource allocation for agentic workflows}. Given a dependency-structured workflow and estimates of success rates and generation lengths for each subtask--model pair, the executor dynamically allocates models and parallel samples across simultaneously executable subtasks while managing the remaining budget and time. We formulate this setting as a finite-horizon stochastic online allocation problem and propose \emph{Monte Carlo Portfolio Planning} (MCPP), a lightweight closed-loop planner that directly estimates constrained completion probability through simulated workflow executions and replans after observed outcomes. Experiments on CodeFlow and ProofFlow demonstrate that MCPP consistently improves constrained completion probability over strong baselines across a wide range of budget--deadline constraints.

PyCSP3-Scheduling: A Scheduling Extension for PyCSP3

PyCSP3^3 provides a productive way to build constraint models for solving combinatorial constrained problems and export them to XCSP3^3, preserving a complete separation between modeling and solving. However, it lacks native support for scheduling abstractions such as interval variables, sequence variables, and resource functions. As a result, scheduling models must be encoded with low-level integer variables and manual channeling constraints, even though PyCSP3^3 already provides global constraints like NoOverlap and Cumulative on integer arrays. We present PyCSP3^3 Scheduling, a library that adds scheduling abstractions to PyCSP3^3 through 53 dedicated constraints and 27 expressions, and compiles them down to standard PyCSP3^3/XCSP3^3 constraints, maintaining the modeling/solving separation that underpins the PyCSP3^3 ecosystem. On 261 paired instances across 17 model families (5 runs each), both formulations produce identical objectives on all 72 doubly-proved optimal pairs and nearly half of the families (8/17) remain structurally unchanged after compilation; however, runtime performance diverges across families, with clear gains on some (up to 5.8x) and regressions on others due to the overhead of compilation decompositions. Finding Optimal Cost-Bounded Plan Reductions: Refined Model

In some real applications a plan may later become unfeasible due to newly imposed budget constraints, yet, at the same time, using only the original actions of the plan and their order is mandatory. In this paper, we study the problem of extracting, from a precomputed plan, a valid subplan that maximizes utility while respecting a cost bound. Each goal is given a utility value and the plan is reduced by removing actions that support low-utility goals, while preserving both executability and the original action order. We show the decision variant is NP-complete and propose two exact methods to solve it: one via oversubscription planning (OSP) and another via Integer Linear Programming (ILP). This paper extends our previous work published at ICAPS 2026 (Del Toro, Fuentetaja, and García-Olaya 2026b). While the core framework remains as introduced there, we further introduce a refined ILP formulation that significantly decreases the model size and improves computational efficiency.
