Abstract

Grinding and sanding are fundamental processes in industrial robotic surface finishing. However, physical trials are expensive and consume workpieces, making reproducible experiments difficult. We present RoboFin3D, a sim-to-real platform built on Isaac Sim and the Newton physics engine, that provides physics-based grinding and sanding simulation for cheap and repeatable robotic surface finishing experiments. RoboFin3D utilizes a signed distance field (SDF) to model the changing geometry of the workpiece, enabling contact computation, live updates and rendering without an intermediate mesh. It additionally uses a separate surface field to model progressive surface appearance change during sanding. We also introduce WeldGen, a weld sampling module, to generate weld beads on 8,918 real-world workpiece meshes for providing diverse simulation assets. The simulation parameters are calibrated on real experimental results and our evaluation demonstrates our simulation's fidelity against the real world. We also demonstrate that simulation-generated data can be used to improve the performance of perception models. Simulation-only fine-tuning of SAM2 improves IoU for segmentation of unsanded regions from 77.15% to 84.47%, while combined synthetic and real training reaches 97.41%.

RoboSnap: One-Shot Real-to-Sim Scene Generation for Generalizable Robot Learning and Evaluation

Recovering real-world scenes as interactive simulation environments can enable generalizable robot learning and reproducible policy evaluation. However, constructing scenes that are both physically stable and visually faithful remains slow and expensive. In this work, we present RoboSnap, a real-to-sim framework that turns a single RGB image into a simulation-ready scene. The key idea is a layered design that separates the physics-critical interaction area from the surrounding visual context: collision-aware foreground assets are refined for stable robot interaction, while a 3D Gaussian splatting visual layer preserves faithful background appearance under novel views. Experiments on DROID scenes and real-robot tasks show that RoboSnap achieves reliable trajectory replay in the recovered scenes, supports task-specific synthetic data generation for policy training, and yields meaningful sim-real correlation for policy evaluation. To further support real-to-sim research, we introduce DROID-Sim, a real-to-sim companion dataset constructed from 564 real-world scenes in DROID. Extensive experiments suggest that the value of real-to-sim methods lies not only in high-fidelity visual reconstruction, but in turning real environments into reusable infrastructure for robot learning and evaluation.

UniPhysGen: Unified Physical Grounding for Simulation-Ready 3D Assets

Physically grounded 3D assets are increasingly important for embodied AI and robotic simulation. However, most existing 3D assets lack unified physical semantics, including articulation semantics and intrinsic physical properties, required for realistic interaction. Current approaches either treat these semantics independently or rely on canonicalized object structures, limiting robustness across heterogeneous 3D assets. We present UniPhys, a scalable framework for automatically transforming raw 3D assets into simulation-ready assets with unified physical semantics. Based on UniPhys, we construct UniPhys-40K, a large-scale physically grounded dataset, together with UniPhys-Bench, a carefully verified benchmark for unified physical grounding evaluation. We further introduce UniPhysGen, a unified physical grounding model that jointly reasons over articulation semantics and intrinsic physical properties. UniPhysGen incorporates geometry-robust articulation grounding to mitigate geometric shortcut bias under heterogeneous part decompositions. Extensive experiments demonstrate state-of-the-art performance across articulation grounding and intrinsic physical property estimation tasks, while the resulting assets can be directly deployed in robotic simulation environments for realistic physical interaction. 3D Generation for Embodied AI and Robotic Simulation: A Survey

Embodied AI and robotic systems increasingly depend on scalable, diverse, and physically grounded 3D content for simulation-based training and real-world deployment. While 3D generative modeling has advanced rapidly, embodied applications impose requirements far beyond visual realism: generated objects must carry kinematic structure and material properties, scenes must support interaction and task execution, and the resulting content must bridge the gap between simulation and reality. This survey reviews 3D generation for embodied AI and organizes the literature around three roles that 3D generation plays in embodied systems. In Data Generator, 3D generation produces simulation-ready objects and assets, including articulated, physically grounded, and deformable content for downstream interaction; in Simulation Environments, it constructs interactive and task-oriented worlds, spanning structure-aware, controllable, and agentic scene generation; and in Sim2Real Bridge, it supports digital twin reconstruction, data augmentation, and synthetic demonstrations for downstream robot learning and real-world transfer. We also show that the field is shifting from visual realism toward interaction readiness, and we identify the main bottlenecks, including limited physical annotations, the gap between geometric quality and physical validity, fragmented evaluation, and the persistent sim-to-real divide, that must be addressed for 3D generation to become a dependable foundation for embodied intelligence.
