Abstract

This paper presents a guidance algorithm for micro aerial vehicles operating in unknown, cluttered environments using only onboard sensing. The method is based on a panel formulation originally derived from aerodynamic potential-flow theory and generates smooth, collision-free guidance vectors from locally perceived obstacles. The approach is extended to unknown environments by constructing and updating the obstacle representation online from onboard LiDAR measurements. The resulting obstacle-avoidance field is integrated with a nominal guiding vector field to produce the final control input. The system is experimentally validated in indoor flight tests under two scenarios: waypoint navigation and directional guidance. In both cases, the vehicle successfully completes its task while avoiding all obstacles in real time using only onboard perception. The results demonstrate that the method is computationally lightweight and suitable for onboard implementation, with pointcloud processing identified as the main practical limitation. These results support the feasibility of lightweight onboard guidance in unknown environments.

OA-MPPI: Occlusion-Aware Model Predictive Path Integral Control for UAV Flight

Autonomous UAV flight through cluttered and partially unknown environments requires reasoning not only about observed obstacles but also about occluded regions that the sensor cannot observe. We present OA-MPPI, an obstacle- and occlusion-aware extension of Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI) control for quadrotor flight that accounts for potential moving agents emerging from these regions into the vehicle's path. At every planning step, we extract a 3D occlusion boundary from the online occupancy map and use it to model the regions that hidden agents could reach over the prediction horizon. We penalize trajectories that enter these expanding regions within MPPI rollouts generated using nonlinear quadrotor dynamics and accounting for individual rotor thrust limits. We validate the proposed approach in simulation and hardware flight experiments, with the complete pipeline running onboard the vehicle in real time. Results show increased clearance from occlusion boundaries compared to baseline MPPI in both settings, as well as avoidance of an agent emerging from occlusion in simulation.

STEM: Semantic Target Search and Exploration using MAVs in Cluttered Environments

Autonomous target search is crucial for deploying Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) in emergency response and rescue missions. Existing approaches either focus on 2D semantic navigation in structured environments -- which is less effective in complex 3D settings, or on robotic exploration in cluttered spaces -- which often lacks the semantic reasoning needed for efficient target search. This paper overcomes these limitations by proposing a novel framework that utilizes a semantically-guided viewpoint planner to minimize target search and exploration time in unstructured 3D environments using an MAV. Specifically, we develop a combinatorial planner that generates efficient semantic exploration plans by prioritizing viewpoints that likely lead to the target. To guide the planner towards the target, an active perception pipeline is developed that propagates semantic priorities of observed objects into neighboring frontier voxels for computing semantic information gains of frontier viewpoints. In addition, we demonstrate how LLM-based similarity scores can be leveraged as semantic priority input to our pipeline. Evaluations in two distinct simulation environments show that the proposed method consistently outperforms baselines by quickly finding the target while maintaining reasonable exploration times. Real-world experiments with an MAV further demonstrate the method's ability to handle practical constraints like limited battery life, small sensor range, and semantic uncertainty.

LNN-Fly: Continuous-Time UAV Navigation for Robust Obstacle Avoidance under Timing Mismatch

End-to-end unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) navigation can achieve impressive agility in simulation, yet its obstacle-avoidance behavior often degrades after deployment because the policy must tolerate simulator mismatch, sensing irregularity, and variable-rate control. These effects are especially dangerous in cluttered environments, where stale observations or short control irregularities can directly lead to collisions. We present LNN-Fly, a deployment-oriented continuous-time navigation policy for LiDAR-based UAV obstacle avoidance. The policy combines a dynamic-programming-inspired structured recurrent update, explicit conditioning on the elapsed control interval Δt, and an input-driven adaptive forgetting gate that refreshes stale latent state near hazards while preserving consistency during sustained maneuvers. It is trained with differentiable rollouts that incorporate deployment-relevant sensing and timing perturbations. In simulation, LNN-Fly improves obstacle-avoidance performance in the tested settings and shows better tolerance to reduced control frequency, sparse observations, and control-period jitter. It also transfers zero-shot from a simplified differentiable simulator to a physical quadrotor. In indoor cross-frequency real-world tests, the system achieves 100% success over 20 flights, while policy inference has a median latency of 0.514 ms on a desktop graphics processing unit (GPU) and about 2.5 ms on the onboard central processing unit (CPU), with onboard P95 latency below 30 ms.
