PhysTrace: Interpretable Temporal Evaluation of Physical Consistency in Video Generative Models

Authors: Taekoan Yoo, Wonkyung Jung, Kyunghun Kim, Kyeongbo Kong

Abstract

World action models increasingly rely on pretrained video models assumed to capture physical dynamics for prediction, planning, and action generation. Existing evaluations assess plausibility, probe representations, or measure predictive surprise, but rarely identify which history-conditioned physical expectations conflict with observations. We introduce PhysTrace, a training-free framework aligning MLLM-generated, history-conditioned expectations with observed video windows to temporally localize physical violations and provide interpretable descriptions without task-specific probes or classifiers. We also introduce IntPhys2-Timing, adding violation intervals to IntPhys2. PhysTrace achieves a Hit Rate of up to 70.7% across physical principles on IntPhys2-Timing and outperforms the compared methods in overall possible-impossible discrimination accuracy on IntPhys2. Applied to reconstructed videos along the trajectories of pretrained diffusion/flow-based video models, PhysTrace reveals attribute- and noise-dependent patterns in physical violation localization, enabling interpretable physical consistency analysis across timesteps.

PhysVid: Physics Aware Local Conditioning for Generative Video Models

Generative video models achieve high visual fidelity but often violate basic physical principles, limiting reliability in real-world settings. Prior attempts to inject physics rely on conditioning: frame-level signals are domain-specific and short-horizon, while global text prompts are coarse and noisy, missing fine-grained dynamics. We present PhysVid, a physics-aware local conditioning scheme that operates over temporally contiguous chunks of frames. Each chunk is annotated with physics-grounded descriptions of states, interactions, and constraints, which are fused with the global prompt via chunk-aware cross-attention during training. At inference, we introduce negative physics prompts (descriptions of locally relevant law violations) to steer generation away from implausible trajectories. On VideoPhy, PhysVid improves physical commonsense scores by ≈33%\approx 33\% over baseline video generators, and by up to ≈8%\approx 8\% on VideoPhy2. These results show that local, physics-aware guidance substantially increases physical plausibility in generative video and marks a step toward physics-grounded video models.

Physion-Eval: Evaluating Physical Realism in Generated Video via Human Reasoning

Video generation models are increasingly used as world simulators for storytelling, simulation, and embodied AI. As these models advance, a key question arises: do generated videos obey the physical laws of the real world? Existing evaluations largely rely on automated metrics or coarse human judgments such as preferences or rubric-based checks. While useful for assessing perceptual quality, these methods provide limited insight into when and why generated dynamics violate real-world physical constraints. We introduce Physion-Eval, a large-scale benchmark of expert human reasoning for diagnosing physical realism failures in videos generated by five state-of-the-art models across egocentric and exocentric views, containing 10,990 expert reasoning traces spanning 22 fine-grained physical categories. Each generated video is derived from a corresponding real-world reference video depicting a clear physical process, and annotated with temporally localized glitches, structured failure categories, and natural-language explanations of the violated physical behavior. Using this dataset, we reveal a striking limitation of current video generation models: in physics-critical scenarios, 83.3% of exocentric and 93.5% of egocentric generated videos exhibit at least one human-identifiable physical glitch. We hope Physion-Eval will set a new standard for physical realism evaluation and guide the development of physics-grounded video generation. PhyProbe: Rethinking Physical Consistency Evaluation in Generated Videos

Evaluating the physical consistency of generated videos remains a fundamental challenge. Existing approaches rely on off-the-shelf vision-language models, which can often be myopic to physical dynamics, or fine-tuned evaluators trained on human annotations, which overfit to dataset-specific cues and fail to generalize. A key challenge is that existing supervision sources provide either relative ordering or absolute scores, but not both reliably and consistently across varied settings. To this end, we introduce PhyProbe, an evaluator that extracts features from a frozen pretrained spatio-temporal encoder and maps them to a scalar physical consistency violation score via a lightweight scoring head. PhyProbe is trained through a unified objective combining pairwise ranking, regression on noisy scalar annotations, and anchor-based calibration over a curated set of heterogeneous supervision sources. Experiments show that PhyProbe outperforms prior methods on most pairwise benchmarks spanning real-generated and generated-generated pairs under varying correspondence, with the largest gains in no-correspondence and generated-generated settings where existing fine-tuned evaluators degrade sharply. PhyProbe achieves strong correlation with human judgments, with close agreement between rank-based and linear metrics, indicating that scores are both well ordered and anchored to a stable [0, 1] scale. Further, despite being trained on supervision indicative of physical consistency, without explicit general-preference labels, PhyProbe also performs competitively on human preference benchmarks: consistent with the observation that physics violations are entangled with broader quality degradations.
