Temporal Consistency
Overview
Temporal consistency concerns whether an AI system’s outputs remain coherent across frames, interactions, or changing observations, which matters for reliable video perception, generation, tracking, and time-aware reasoning. Common approaches use temporal losses, memory or recurrent models, cross-frame alignment, tracking, and physical or causal constraints to connect predictions over time. Benchmarks increasingly test long sequences, occlusion and object permanence, video flicker, and temporal scope in dialogue, rather than relying only on per-frame or single-turn accuracy. A central tension is maintaining useful continuity without locking in stale beliefs: systems must preserve hidden or stable information while adapting when the world or relevant facts genuinely change.
