Abstract

Referring expression grounding in overhead imagery requires oriented bounding boxes rather than horizontal ones, since aerial objects appear at arbitrary orientations. Most grounding models emit box coordinates sequentially; Parallel Box Decoding (PBD) instead predicts all geometry slots in one forward pass, but only for four-coordinate horizontal boxes. We extend this block-aligned interface to a six-slot oriented representation using a double-angle parameterization. Rather than assuming correctness from a decreasing loss curve, we verify the extension with image/prompt-shuffle controls and visibility/leakage probes, which show that the corrected model depends on both the image and the prompt rather than on prompt statistics alone. On the aerial vehicle visual grounding (AVVG) benchmark, whose targets are genuinely oriented, the extended model improves rotated intersection over union (rotIoU) from 0.1253 for the zero-shot baseline to 0.303 +/- 0.012 (mean +/- standard deviation over three training seeds) across the complete 6139-record test split spanning all 120 images. Learning oriented boxes rather than their axis-aligned envelopes adds 0.055 +/- 0.008 rotIoU beyond a matched control (per-seed 95% confidence intervals all excluding zero), whereas block expansion alone yields no rotIoU gain distinguishable from zero.

Toward Comprehensive 3D Grounding: Orientation Grounding through Vision-Language Models

Grounding is a core capability of spatial vision-language models, yet most existing work focuses only on where a referred object is. Many 3D tasks also require knowing how it is oriented. Although existing 3D VLMs may predict oriented boxes, box pose does not explicitly capture object-centric orientation or symmetry-induced ambiguities. We introduce orientation grounding, a referring grounding task that predicts an object's 6D orientation and axial symmetry from a language or box query in single-view or multi-view scenes. To support this task, we construct ReferOri, with 331K multi-view and 387K single-view orientation-grounding queries obtained through scalable reconstruction, consistency checking, and human verification. We further present OG-VLM, which adapts a 3D VLM with structured box/orientation outputs, sign and symmetry tokens, and geometry-aware auxiliary losses. Across single-view and multi-view benchmarks, OG-VLM substantially outperforms orientation-aware VLM baselines and surpasses object-level orientation foundation models on scene-level referring benchmarks, showing that explicit orientation grounding is a distinct and learnable capability beyond localization. Downstream results validate its benefit for orientation-related spatial reasoning.

A Unified Framework and Dataset for Oriented Object Visual Grounding in Remote Sensing

Visual grounding in remote sensing images aims to locate objects described by referring expressions. Most existing methods predict horizontal bounding boxes, which are often inaccurate for objects with arbitrary orientations. To address this limitation, we introduce O2^2-VG, a family of models for oriented object visual grounding with three complementary designs. Specifically, O2^2-VG-Trans is a cross-modality transformer for oriented object visual grounding. It establishes a strong discriminative foundation for the model family. Building upon it, O2^2-VG-Uni predicts universal oriented proposals for possible foreground objects without specific text prompts. It also supports object retrieval through cached proposal embeddings. Using these universal oriented proposals as input prompts, O2^2-VG-VLM is an autoregressive vision-language model. It generates oriented box token blocks in parallel through multi-token prediction. In addition, we construct DIOR-R-RSVG, a dataset for oriented object visual grounding in remote sensing images. It provides image, expression, and oriented box triplets for training and evaluation. Together, the O2^2-VG family provides a flexible framework that spans discriminative transformers and generative vision-language models. It achieves superior performance across multiple benchmarks. Jag: Direct Box Prediction for Efficient Visual Grounding

Visual grounding combines image--language understanding with geometric prediction, yet autoregressive multimodal models often express a box as a coordinate sequence. Sequential decoding adds computation to the multimodal processing needed for localization. Adapting these representations to box geometry offers a route to direct prediction. We present Jag, which adapts a compact pretrained multimodal model for direct continuous box prediction. A lightweight regression head reads the last valid input-token state, conditioned on the image and referring expression, and predicts all four box coordinates together. Geometric supervision jointly adapts the language backbone, visual merger, and regression head, allowing localization losses to shape both the multimodal representations and the coordinate mapping. Inference retains image--language processing and returns the box in one forward pass, without coordinate generation or text parsing. Across benchmarks, Jag consistently improves grounding accuracy over its base model across the observed target sizes and expression groups. Component ablation show that jointly adapting the representations and head substantially improves accuracy over training the head alone. Against existing specialized grounding models, it achieves competitive accuracy with lower single-request latency and GPU memory use. These results show how supervision tailored to the geometric answer can specialize a compact pretrained multimodal model for accurate grounding and efficient direct prediction.
