Abstract

The advancement of multimodal learning is heavily constrained by the scarcity and high annotation cost of high-quality instruction data. While raw videos offer an abundant and dynamic source of visual knowledge, transforming them into precise instruction data remains highly challenging. To bridge this gap, we present VidUEU-Agent, an automated pipeline that synthesizes instruction data from raw videos for multimodal understanding, editing, and unified tasks. VidUEU-Agent follows a four-stage pipeline: it performs global perception to filter low-quality shots, mines keyframes and multimodal signals, constructs metadata and routes the metadata to synthesize instruction samples. More importantly, our agent framework can autonomously iterate the data distribution based on downstream training results, thereby optimizing data quality, balance, and training effectiveness. Scaling this pipeline, we construct VidUEU-100K, a large-scale dataset of 100K training samples spanning multiple domains and tasks, providing a robust foundation for developing comprehensive multimodal capabilities. Extensive experiments demonstrate that fine-tuning baseline models on VidUEU-100K yields significant and consistent performance gains across diverse representative benchmarks, validating the effectiveness of our proposed agent framework and dataset.

SynMulti: Synthetic-to-Real Learning for Multimodal Video Understanding

Training multimodal large language models (MLLMs) for video understanding requires large-scale annotated data spanning diverse tasks such as object counting, question answering, and segmentation. However, collecting and annotating multimodal video data in real-world is costly, slow, and inherently limited in diversity and coverage. To address this challenge, we propose~SynMulti dataset, along with a unified synthetic data generation pipeline capable of automatically producing unlimited multimodal video data with rich and diverse supervision. Our framework supports multiple task formats within a single pipeline, enabling scalable and consistent data creation across tasks. To further enhance reasoning ability, we introduce a VQA-based fine-tuning strategy that trains models to answer structured questions about visual content rather than relying solely on captions or simple instructions. This formulation encourages deeper visual grounding and reasoning. We evaluate our approach in three challenging tasks: video object counting, video-based visual question answering, and video object segmentation. Experimental results demonstrate that models trained predominantly on synthetic data generalize effectively to real-world datasets, often outperforming traditionally trained counterparts. Our findings highlight the potential of unified synthetic data pipelines as a scalable alternative to expensive real-world annotation for multimodal video understanding.

UniVideo: Unified Understanding, Generation, and Editing for Videos

Unified multimodal models have shown promising results in multimodal content generation and editing but remain largely limited to the image domain. In this work, we present UniVideo, a versatile framework that extends unified modeling to the video domain. UniVideo adopts a dual-stream design, combining a Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) for instruction understanding with a Multimodal DiT (MMDiT) for video generation. This design preserves the MLLM's original text generation capabilities, enables accurate interpretation of complex multimodal instructions, and maintains visual consistency in the generated content. Built on this architecture, UniVideo unifies diverse video generation and editing tasks under a single multimodal instruction paradigm and is jointly trained across them. Extensive experiments demonstrate that UniVideo matches or surpasses state-of-the-art task-specific baselines in text/image-to-video generation, in-context video generation and in-context video editing. Notably, the unified design of UniVideo enables two forms of generalization. First, UniVideo supports task composition, such as combining editing with style transfer, by integrating multiple capabilities within a single instruction. Second, even without explicit training on free-form video editing, UniVideo transfers its editing capability from large-scale image editing data to this setting, handling unseen instructions such as changing the environment or altering materials within a video. Beyond these core capabilities, UniVideo also supports visual-prompt-based video generation, where the MLLM interprets visual prompts and guides the MMDiT during synthesis. To foster future research, we released our model and code.

VideoAgent: All-in-One Framework for Video Understanding and Editing

Video editing has become essential in digital media creation, yet existing automated systems are restricted to short segment processing and domain-specific tasks. They face two critical limitations: i) inability to handle diverse video comprehension and editing operations, and ii) lack of long-video understanding for coherent narrative creation. We propose VideoAgent, an all-in-one agentic framework addressing these challenges through two key innovations. First, we develop automated video shot creation with shot planning agents for coherent narratives and cross-modal retrieval for aligned visual content. Second, we design a multi-agent orchestration framework integrating over thirty specialized editing agents. Intent parsing filters relevant tools while textual-gradient graph optimization assembles complex editing pipelines. Extensive experiments on our newly-proposed VideoEdit benchmark and public datasets demonstrate VideoAgent's superiority over existing multimodal LLMs and agentic systems. VideoAgent achieves 87-95% orchestration success rates while reducing API costs by 60%. Human evaluation across six video categories shows VideoAgent produces professional-quality content approaching human-level performance, with ratings only 4% below human-created videos. We release our code at https://github.com/HKUDS/VideoAgent.
