Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Overview
Cognitive behavioral therapy helps people recognize links between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, then use techniques such as reframing thoughts and changing behavior to address distress. AI research explores language models that can support or simulate CBT through structured session stages, cognitive-conceptualization diagrams, longitudinal memory, and multi-agent or reinforcement-learning methods. Datasets and evaluations assess CBT skill, clinical fidelity, safety, and responsiveness to patient distress or resistance, often using expert clinicians alongside automated and simulated-client ratings. A central tension is that following CBT protocols does not guarantee sound contextual judgment, rapport, or safety, and gains on simulated evaluations do not yet establish clinical effectiveness.
