Digital Forensics
Overview
Digital forensics studies how to collect, recover, and interpret evidence from devices, networks, cloud systems, blockchains, and digital media. Methods range from file carving, log and memory analysis, and cryptographic provenance to machine-learning systems that detect, localize, or attribute image, video, audio, and document manipulation. Multimodal models and retrieval-based agents are increasingly used to search evidence and assist investigations, with evaluation spanning forensic benchmarks, cross-domain tests, and open-world settings. A central challenge is making results reliable on unfamiliar data and transformations while ensuring explanations are evidence-grounded, calibrated, auditable, and suitable for legal scrutiny.
