Functional Hand Type Prior for 3D Hand Pose Estimation and Action Recognition from Egocentric View Monocular Videos

Current methods for egocentric view action recognition often face challenges in perceiving dynamic hand movements relying solely on geometrical or physical information. In this work, we effectively address this problem by gaining insights into the correlation between functional hand configurations and objects, which improves the detailed interpretation of real-world scenarios. To this end, we introduce a practical taxonomy of hand types based on the functioning perspective and utilize it for per-frame hand type labeling on existing datasets. We also propose a novel hand action recognition framework considering semantic details of the hand type as prior. This approach boosts the network's understanding of the continuous hand interaction throughout the action sequence. Our whole pipeline consists of three main modules: (1) Feature Extraction, (2) Egocentric Knowledge Module, which estimates 3D hand pose, object category, and hand type leveraging short-term cues, and (2) Egocentric Action Module, which aggregates per-frame knowledge, including text embeddings of hand type, over a longer time. In our extensive experiments with large-scale benchmarks, FPHA and H2O, our model outperforms current state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its superior performance.

Single-Query Person-Centric Bimanual Hand-Object Interaction Detection

Understanding person-level bi-manual interactions requires not only detecting hands, but also identifying which two hands belong to the same person and what each hand interacts with. Existing hand--object interaction methods are mostly hand-centric: they treat each hand as an independent instance, which can lead to ambiguous ownership in multi-person scenes. We propose a person-centric formulation in which a single query predicts a structured output for one person, including the human box, body pose, hand boxes and states, and interaction targets. We introduce part-aware deformable attention to allocate attention across human, hand, and pose-specific reference regions, enabling one query to capture the full person structure. We further unify detection and interaction reasoning with a hand-to-query relationship matrix, where each hand selects its interaction target from the detected query set plus a learnable off token, directly recovering the target's box and class without separate object regression. We build a COCO-based dataset with person-centric bi-manual interaction annotations and define structured metrics for evaluating hand states and complete hand--object tuples. Experiments with a transformer-based detector show that our formulation improves person-level bi-manual interaction parsing and provides an effective unified framework for joint detection, pose estimation, and hand reasoning.

Grounding Generated Video Plans in Simulation Towards Versatile Dexterous Controllers

Generated hand-object interaction (HOI) videos provide a controllable way to propose manipulation motions. Simulation-based HOI tracking can translate such kinematic references into feasible low-level control, but its scalability is limited by the lack of reliable reference motions. We therefore combine generated videos with simulation-based HOI grounding: during training, generated videos provide diverse motion references for learning a multi-object, multi-trajectory HOI tracker, and at deployment, the video model produces motion plans that are executed by the learned tracker. In particular, we propose a method that enables scalable reference generation by HOI reconstruction with minimal manual intervention and successfully grounds more than 1,500 generated videos in simulation, achieving success rates over 25 percentage points higher than those of baselines during simulation-based training. In real-world closed-loop experiments, it achieves diverse grasps, including functional grasps, non-prehensile manipulation, and post-grasp object-pose tracking. Vision-Language Models for Egocentric Video: From Hand-Object Interaction to Embodied AI

Egocentric video captures activities from the wearer's perspective, providing a direct view of human attention, hand--object interaction, and goal-directed behavior. This perspective is increasingly important for wearable intelligence, assistive systems, human--robot interaction, and embodied AI, yet it introduces challenges including ego-motion, occlusion, small active objects, viewpoint-dependent appearance, and long-range temporal dependencies. Vision--language models (VLMs) offer a promising foundation for addressing these challenges by linking visual observations with semantic knowledge and natural-language supervision. This survey presents a critical review of VLMs for egocentric video understanding, tracing the progression from conventional recognition architectures to multimodal foundation models and embodied systems. We organize the literature around tasks, datasets, hand--object interaction understanding, temporal reasoning, frame and clip selection, multimodal representation learning, prompting, semantic alignment, and model adaptation. Particular attention is given to graph-based and object-centric reasoning as mechanisms for modeling relations among hands, objects, actions, and scene context over time. We further examine how first-person perception and multimodal foundation models support wearable assistance, robot skill learning, human-to-robot transfer, and embodied decision making. Across the reviewed literature, a consistent limitation emerges: current models recognize visible objects more reliably than evolving interactions, actions, and user intent, especially over long activities. We therefore identify temporally grounded reasoning, interaction-aware supervision, efficient long-video processing, multimodal fusion, graph-enhanced representations, cross-domain generalization, privacy, and trustworthy evaluation as key priorities for deployable embodied intelligence.

EgoPHI: Estimating 3D Hand-Object Contact and Force from Egocentric Vision

Understanding hand-object interaction from egocentric vision is essential for modeling how people physically engage with the surrounding world. Yet reasoning about physically grounded interaction requires estimating the forces acting on hands and objects, beyond localizing contact. We present EgoPHI, the first method that jointly estimates dense contact maps and 3D force distributions on hand and object meshes from a single monocular RGB image and object geometry. To address the lack of scalable ground-truth force annotations, we introduce a physics-based simulation pipeline that augments existing hand-object datasets with dense per-vertex force supervision. EgoPHI then learns dense 3D contact and force on interacting hand and articulated object meshes, extending vision-based force estimation beyond image-space or planar settings. Our evaluation on in-distribution and out-of-distribution benchmarks shows that EgoPHI improves force estimation over existing approaches while generalizing to unseen datasets. To evaluate sim-to-real transfer, we constructed two physical objects that capture dense object contact and force magnitude and used them to record a dataset of interactions from eight participants across diverse touch and grasp types. Our results demonstrate that EgoPHI recovers meaningful 3D contact and force distributions in simulated, out-of-distribution, and real-world settings, advancing egocentric hand-object understanding from contact localization toward physically grounded interaction reasoning.

Do Egocentric Video-Language Models Capture Both Hand- and Object-Centric Cues?

Hand-object interaction (HOI) recognition requires capturing both hand manipulations and object transformations. However, existing video-language models often fall into shortcuts by relying on spurious correlations among hands, objects, or environmental context, rather than reasoning from the appearance and dynamics of hands and objects themselves. To address this limitation, we propose a new learning paradigm that combines (i) hand-object masked training, which enables robust reasoning from partial hand or object observations, and (ii) an HOI-dynamics-aware decoder that explicitly learns hand- and object-centric embeddings through auxiliary predictions of their locations and semantics, enhancing sensitivity to both cues. To systematically evaluate such cue-specific reasoning, we introduce Cue-Isolated HOI (CI-HOI), a new evaluation that assesses models' ability to predict actions from hand- and object-related cues independently. To enable CI-HOI, we curate the DEHOI testbed, which separates hand- and object-related observations for disentangled HOI evaluation through inpainting. Using DEHOI, we demonstrate both quantitatively and qualitatively that our training strategy exploits hand- and object-centric information more effectively than existing models. Our approach improves over existing models on DEHOI, standard action recognition, object state recognition, and even robot manipulation action recognition, leading to more robust HOI understanding.

Improving and Evaluating Hand-Object Interaction Detection

Understanding hands and the objects they interact with, both directly and through tools, is a key step for tasks ranging from action perception to 3D reconstruction and robotics. Our paper provides several contributions to the Hand-Object Interaction (HOI) understanding literature: (1) HOI-DETR, a new framework that introduces hand-object and object-object interactions to the Co-DETR architecture to produce a state-of-the-art method; (2) a comprehensive HOI evaluation suite of 4 diverse datasets, including a video benchmark derived from the HD-EPIC dataset and fresh annotations that improve the Hands23 benchmark and (3) a trained checkpoint that significantly improves the state of the art across Hands23, HOIST, FineBio, and HD-EPIC, including mAP gains of over 20 percentage points on Hands23 and FineBio. Our ablations confirm the contributions of each model component.

EgoInteract: Synthetic Egocentric Videos Generation for Interaction Understanding and Anticipation

Collecting large-scale egocentric video datasets with dense spatial and temporal annotations is costly, slow, and often constrained by environmental biases, privacy constraints, and limited coverage of interaction patterns. While synthetic data has shown strong potential in several vision domains, its use for egocentric perception remains relatively underexplored, especially for tasks requiring temporally coherent human-object interactions. In this work, we introduce EgoInteract, a controllable simulator for egocentric video generation designed to model fine-grained egocentric interactions and their temporal dynamics. The simulator enables precise control over camera, human body and hand motion, object manipulation, and scene composition across diverse environments. Building on this framework, we generate a synthetic egocentric video dataset with dense spatial and temporal annotations for temporal action segmentation, next-active object detection, interaction anticipation, and hand-object interaction detection. We evaluate models trained with simulated data on multiple real-world egocentric benchmarks spanning diverse environments, object categories, and interaction patterns. Results show consistent improvements over strong baselines across tasks and datasets, demonstrating the effectiveness and transferability of our simulation-based approach.

Detecting Precise Hand Touch Moments in Egocentric Video

We address the challenging task of detecting the precise moment when hands make contact with objects in egocentric videos. This frame-level detection is crucial for augmented reality, human-computer interaction, assistive technologies, and robot learning applications, where contact onset signals action initiation or completion. Temporally precise detection is particularly challenging due to subtle hand motion variations near contact, frequent occlusions, fine-grained manipulation patterns, and the inherent motion dynamics of first-person perspectives. To tackle these challenges, we propose a Hand-informed Context Enhanced module (HiCE; pronounced `high-see') that leverages spatiotemporal features from hand regions and their surrounding context through cross-attention mechanisms, learning to identify potential contact patterns. Our approach is further refined with a grasp-aware loss and soft label that emphasizes hand pose patterns and movement dynamics characteristic of touch events, enabling the model to distinguish between near-contact and actual contact frames. We also introduce TouchMoment, an egocentric dataset containing 4,021 videos and 8,456 annotated contact moments spanning over one million frames. Experiments on TouchMoment show that, under a strict evaluation criterion that counts a prediction as correct only if it falls within a two-frame tolerance of the ground-truth moment, our method achieves substantial gains and outperforms state-of-the-art event-spotting baselines by 16.91% average precision.

Leveraging Synthetic Data for Enhancing Egocentric Hand-Object Interaction Detection

In this work, we explore the role of synthetic data in improving the detection of Hand-Object Interactions from egocentric images. Through extensive experimentation and comparative analysis on VISOR, EgoHOS, and ENIGMA-51 datasets, our findings demonstrate the potential of synthetic data to significantly improve HOI detection, particularly when real labeled data are scarce or unavailable. By using synthetic data and only 10% of the real labeled data, we achieve improvements in Overall AP over models trained exclusively on real data, with gains of +5.67% on VISOR, +8.24% on EgoHOS, and +11.69% on ENIGMA-51. Furthermore, we systematically study how aligning synthetic data to specific real-world benchmarks with respect to objects, grasps, and environments, showing that the effectiveness of synthetic data consistently improves with better synthetic-real alignment. As a result of this work, we release a new data generation pipeline and the new HOI-Synth benchmark, which augments existing datasets with synthetic images of hand-object interaction. These data are automatically annotated with hand-object contact states, bounding boxes, and pixel-wise segmentation masks.
