Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction Estimation
Overview
Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is the percentage of blood in the heart’s main pumping chamber ejected with each beat, and it helps assess cardiac function. Methods estimate it from echocardiography or cardiac MRI, using chamber measurements and segmentation or learning directly from image sequences; ECG and clinical records can also help screen for reduced LVEF. Current approaches include video transformers, self-supervised and foundation-model features, and fusion across views or data types, with performance commonly assessed by measurement error and by classification of reduced function. A central challenge is ensuring estimates remain reliable across sites and measurement conventions, and that models attend to clinically meaningful cardiac motion rather than only image appearance.
