Overview

Person re-identification (ReID) studies how to retrieve the same person across images or video from different cameras, even when viewpoint, lighting, pose, or clothing changes. Common approaches learn discriminative embeddings with metric learning and transformers, then add local body-part or attribute cues, temporal information, and vision-language supervision; cross-modal methods align visible and infrared, text and image, or aerial and ground data. Evaluation spans benchmarks such as Market-1501 and MSMT17 as well as specialized settings for occlusion, clothing changes, video, and visible-infrared matching. A central challenge is building representations that generalize to unseen cameras and domains without relying on unstable appearance cues, while preserving useful identity information and addressing privacy and label constraints.
