Representation Engineering
Overview
Representation engineering studies the internal activations of language, vision, audio, and multimodal models, asking how concepts and behaviors are encoded and how interventions can change them. Common approaches identify directions or subspaces using contrastive examples, principal component analysis, linear probes, or sparse autoencoders, then steer activations at inference time or edit model components. These methods are used for safety and refusal, hallucination reduction, preference alignment, reasoning, and adaptation across domains or languages. A central challenge is making interventions reliable while avoiding collateral changes to fluency, accuracy, routing, or other capabilities, and evaluation must test both the intended effect and those side effects.
