RL for Image Editing
RL: Reinforcement Learning
Overview
This field studies how to train image editors to carry out requested changes without damaging details that should remain, including product identity, faces, and surrounding context. Common approaches optimize diffusion or flow-based editors with methods such as GRPO, using human preferences, multimodal evaluators, or task-specific rewards for instruction following, visual quality, and preservation. Other systems use reinforcement learning to improve tool-using agents and planners that break complex or multi-turn requests into editing steps. A central challenge is making reward signals reliable and spatially precise, so models improve the requested edit without exploiting imperfect evaluators or introducing unintended changes.
