Overview
Robotics brings together mechanical design, sensing, perception, planning, and control so machines can act in changing physical environments, from homes and factories to fields, hospitals, and space. Approaches range from geometric models, feedback and model-predictive control, and motion planning to reinforcement learning, imitation learning, and vision-language-action models; many systems combine these with specialized hardware such as soft, aerial, legged, or continuum robots. Simulation, shared datasets, and benchmarks help compare methods, while real-robot experiments test whether they transfer across embodiments, conditions, and long tasks. A central challenge is making learned systems reliable, safe, and efficient outside controlled demonstrations, where uncertainty, contact, hardware limits, and human needs all matter.
