Task Arithmetic
Overview
Task arithmetic studies how to represent a fine-tuned model as a task vector—the change from its original weights—and combine such vectors to add, remove, or adjust capabilities. Common approaches include averaging or sparsifying updates, reducing conflicts through orthogonalization or curvature-based regularization, and compressing vectors into reusable bases. These methods are used for model merging, continual learning, unlearning, and targeted behavior control, often without retraining on the original data. A central challenge is that updates do not always combine predictably: effects can depend on task pairs, prompts, formats, and update order, so evaluations must check both the intended change and preservation of unrelated abilities.
