Wireless Communications
Overview
Wireless communications studies how transmitters and receivers exchange information despite noise, interference, mobility, and limited spectrum and power. Physical-layer work develops channel estimation, beamforming, modulation, coding, and signal detection, using tools such as ray tracing, deep learning, and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces. At the network level, researchers use optimization, bandits, and reinforcement learning for scheduling, routing, handover, and resource allocation across cellular, Wi-Fi, satellite, and UAV systems; newer work also explores integrated sensing and communication and semantic transmission. Results are tested in standards-based channel simulations, ray-traced environments, and real testbeds, but generalization across hardware and settings, deployment cost, and the gap between simulated and operational performance remain central challenges.
