Abstract

Model Predictive Control (MPC) is widely used for torque-controlled robots, but classical formulations often neglect real-time force feedback and struggle with contact-rich industrial tasks under collision constraints. Deburring in particular requires precise tool insertion, stable force regulation, and collision-free circular motions in challenging configurations, which exceeds the capability of standard MPC pipelines. We propose a framework that integrates force-feedback MPC with diffusion-based motion priors to address these challenges. The diffusion model serves as a memory of motion strategies, providing robust initialization and adaptation across multiple task instances, while MPC ensures safe execution with explicit force tracking, torque feasibility, and collision avoidance. We validate our approach on a torque-controlled manipulator performing industrial deburring tasks. Experiments demonstrate reliable tool insertion, accurate normal force tracking, and circular deburring motions even in hard-to-reach configurations and under obstacle constraints. To our knowledge, this is the first integration of diffusion motion priors with force-feedback MPC for collision-aware, contact-rich industrial tasks.

ToMPC: Task-oriented Model Predictive Control via ADMM for Safe Robotic Manipulation

This paper proposes a task-oriented model predictive control (ToMPC) framework for safe and efficient robotic manipulation in open workspaces. The framework unifies collision-free motion and robot-environment interaction to address diverse scenarios. Additionally, it introduces task-oriented obstacle avoidance that leverages kinematic redundancy to enhance manipulation efficiency in obstructed environments. This complex optimization problem is solved by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), which decomposes the problem into two subproblems tackled by differential dynamic programming (DDP) and quadratic programming (QP), respectively. The effectiveness of this approach is validated in simulation and hardware experiments on a Franka Panda robotic manipulator. Results demonstrate that the framework can plan motion and/or force trajectories in real time, maximize the manipulation range while avoiding obstacles, and strictly adhere to safety-related hard constraints.

Task-Space Motion-Force Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for Precise and Compliant Control under Uncertainties

In Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC), the control law is implicitly determined by the solution of an Optimal Control Problem (OCP). Consequently, OCP design is often tailored to specific platforms and tasks, demanding extensive expert knowledge and tuning effort. To address this, we propose a unified NMPC framework that directly plans and controls the robot joints subject to task-space motion and force requirements and is capable of seamlessly generalizing across multiple robotic platforms and diverse tasks. Furthermore, optimization-based methods often treat interactions as rigid contacts, making the torque solution sensitive to the modeling errors of the robot dynamics and the environment. We study the intrinsic task-space impedance of our proposed controller, its partial contraction for differential stability and differential passivity under unmodeled interactions. As a result, our framework enables closing the force-feedback loop in the high-level planning layer to achieve precise motion-force tracking performance, addressing the long-standing challenge of force-feedback NMPC. Finally, we validate our framework on physical hardware, demonstrating hybrid motion-force control on a redundant manipulator and compliant locomotion on a quadruped, while preserving core NMPC advantages such as hard constraint satisfaction, optimal redundancy exploitation, and real-time planning under unforeseen interactions.

Real-Time Dynamics-Based Torque-Sampling MPPI for Compliant and Force Aware Manipulation

This study proposes a novel Model Predictive Path Integral (MPPI)-based task-space control framework. The proposed framework explicitly solves rigid-body dynamics within a real-time MPC formulation and enforces safety constraints, enabling accurate motion and force control that yields compliant behaviors for safe and effective physical interaction of robotic manipulators in unstructured environments. By leveraging MPPI, the proposed framework efficiently handles nonlinear dynamics that are difficult to solve with conventional MPC approaches in real-time. Furthermore, we develop a torque-sampling-based control architecture that enables efficient exploitation of GPU-based parallelization, resulting in effective compliant and force-aware behaviors. As a result, the proposed framework achieves a solver update rate of over 166 Hz with a 0.18 s prediction horizon, and its performance is validated through real-world experiments on a 7-DoF manipulator.
