Abstract

Point cloud registration involves aligning one point cloud with another or with a three-dimensional (3D) model, enabling the integration of multimodal data into a unified representation. This is essential in applications such as construction monitoring, autonomous driving, robotics, and virtual or augmented reality (VR/AR). With the increasing accessibility of point cloud acquisition technologies, such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and structured light scanning, along with recent advances in deep learning, the research focus has increasingly shifted towards downstream tasks, particularly point cloud-to-model (PC2Model) registration. While data-driven methods aim to automate this process, they struggle with sparsity, noise, clutter, and occlusions in real-world scans, which limit their performance. To address these challenges, this paper introduces the PC2Model benchmark, a publicly available dataset designed to support the training and evaluation of both classical and data-driven methods. Developed under the leadership of ICWG II/Ib, the PC2Model benchmark adopts a hybrid design that combines simulated point clouds with, in some cases, real-world scans and their corresponding 3D models. Simulated data provide precise ground truth and controlled conditions, while real-world data introduce sensor and environmental artefacts. This design supports robust training and evaluation across domains and enables the systematic analysis of model transferability from simulated to real-world scenarios. Unsupervised Point Cloud Registration via Training-Time Semantic Guidance

Unsupervised registration of large-scale LiDAR point clouds remains challenging due to the geometric ambiguity inherent in outdoor scenes, which degrades pseudo-label quality and leads to suboptimal convergence, particularly for sparse, low-resolution scans such as those from nuScenes. We reveal that registration models intrinsically encode semantic awareness that strongly correlates with registration accuracy, albeit without explicit semantic supervision. However, this native awareness is fragile: noisy supervision arising from geometric ambiguity in unsupervised settings rapidly erodes the learned semantic structure, causing performance collapse. To this end, we propose CAESAR, a teacher-student framework guided by an off-the-shelf 3D segmentation model exclusively during training. We observe that potential inlier matches are often buried just beneath a few spurious neighbors in the noisy feature space, motivating Dual-Cue Guided Re-Matching to recover them through reselection rather than simply rejecting. Building on this, a train-only Semantic-Geometric Label Mining performs lightweight, batch-specific teacher refinement and mines reliable pseudo-labels under semantic guidance. We further introduce Semantic Predictive Distillation to consolidate the student's semantic awareness in the feature space. Extensive experiments on KITTI and nuScenes demonstrate state-of-the-art performance, with pronounced gains on the challenging nuScenes benchmark. Crucially, CAESAR incurs zero inference overhead and requires no semantic annotations on the registration data. Code will be released.

C-GenReg: Training-Free 3D Point Cloud Registration by Multi-View-Consistent Geometry-to-Image Generation with Probabilistic Modalities Fusion

We introduce C-GenReg, a training-free framework for 3D point cloud registration that leverages the complementary strengths of world-scale generative priors and registration-oriented Vision Foundation Models (VFMs). Current learning-based 3D point cloud registration methods struggle to generalize across sensing modalities, sampling differences, and environments. Hence, C-GenReg augments the geometric point cloud registration branch by transferring the matching problem into an auxiliary image domain, where VFMs excel, using a World Foundation Model to synthesize multi-view-consistent RGB representations from the input geometry. This generative transfer, preserves spatial coherence across source and target views without any fine-tuning. From these generated views, a VFM pretrained for finding dense correspondences extracts matches. The resulting pixel correspondences are lifted back to 3D via the original depth maps. To further enhance robustness, we introduce a "Match-then-Fuse" probabilistic cold-fusion scheme that combines two independent correspondence posteriors, that of the generated-RGB branch with that of the raw geometric branch. This principled fusion preserves each modality inductive bias and provides calibrated confidence without any additional learning. C-GenReg is zero-shot and plug-and-play: all modules are pretrained and operate without fine-tuning. Extensive experiments on indoor (3DMatch, ScanNet) and outdoor (Waymo) benchmarks demonstrate strong zero-shot performance and superior cross-domain generalization. For the first time, we demonstrate a generative registration framework that operates successfully on real outdoor LiDAR data, where no imagery data is available.

Spectral Consistency-Guided Multiview Point Cloud Registration for Low-Overlap Scenes

Multiview point cloud registration is particularly challenging in low-overlap scenes, where reliable correspondences are limited and incorrect pairwise transformations can affect global pose estimation. In addition, registering all scan pairs is computationally expensive because many pairs provide weak geometric information. To address these problems, we propose GMPCR, a non-learning-based spectral consistency-guided framework for efficient and robust multiview point cloud registration. GMPCR builds a refined second-order compatibility structure from initial correspondences and uses its dominant spectral response to evaluate both correspondence reliability and scan-pair confidence. This allows unreliable correspondences to be filtered and informative scan pairs to be selected before relative transformation estimation, leading to a sparse pose graph and reduced pairwise registration cost. For each retained scan pair, maximal-clique-based hypothesis generation is used to estimate reliable relative transformations. The resulting pose graph is further refined by an adaptive history-aware synchronization scheme, in which the effect of residual history is adjusted according to changes in the global rotation residual. A recovery mechanism also allows down-weighted edges to regain confidence when their global consistency improves. Experiments on 3DMatch, 3DLoMatch, ScanNet, and ETH demonstrate the effectiveness of GMPCR. It achieves registration recalls of 97.2% and 89.6% on 3DMatch and 3DLoMatch, respectively, while maintaining competitive performance on ScanNet and ETH. The results show that GMPCR provides a favorable balance among registration accuracy, robustness to low overlap, and computational efficiency.
