Vision-Language Models (VLMs) excel at 2D tasks such as grounding and captioning, yet remain limited in 3D understanding. A key limitation is their text-only supervision paradigm, which under-constrains fine-grained visual perception and prevents the recovery of dense geometry. Prior methods either distill geometry from external vision models, introducing error accumulation, or enable direct prediction with inefficient per-pixel query or coarse token-level outputs. In this paper, we propose DepthVLM, a simple yet effective framework that transforms a single VLM into a native dense geometry predictor while preserving its multimodal capability. By attaching a lightweight depth head to the LLM backbone and training under a unified vision-text supervision paradigm with a two-stage schedule, DepthVLM generates full-resolution depth maps alongside language outputs in a single forward pass. We further introduce a unified indoor-outdoor metric depth benchmark in a VLM-compatible format. Experiments show that DepthVLM significantly outperforms existing VLMs with higher inference efficiency, surpasses leading pure vision models, and improves complex 3D spatial reasoning, moving toward a truly unified multimodal foundation model. Vision Language Models (VLMs) enable a unified model to solve various vision tasks through prompting. They have shown promising performance in semantic understanding. However, 3D understanding still largely relies on expert vision models with complex task-specific designs. The key argument this work wants to make is that VLMs are native 3D learners. Our in-depth large scale study shows that 1) focal length unification, 2) text-based pixel reference and 3) data mixture and scaling, are all you need for effective 3D learning. Model architecture changes, large models, heavy data augmentations, and complex losses including the regression formulation, many of which form the foundation of expert vision models, are actually not necessary conditions. As a result, we propose VLM3, a scalable method with the simplest design that enables standard VLMs to master diverse 3D tasks. VLM3 not only advances the VLM depth estimation accuracy by a large margin (0.84 -> 0.9), but also enables diverse 3D tasks such as pixel correspondence, camera pose estimation and object-level 3D understanding, matching expert vision model accuracy while maintaining standard architectures and text-based training. We believe VLM3 opens up a new paradigm for simple and scalable 3D learning.
Despite rapid progress, most existing vision-language models (VLMs) built from 2D visual inputs often struggle when handling various 3D tasks that require fine-grained spatial understanding and reasoning. To bridge this gap, we present VLM-IE3D, a unified framework that enhances the 3D spatial awareness of VLMs by equipping them with both implicit and explicit 3D geometries learned from RGB videos. Our VLM-IE3D introduces Implicit Geometry Tokens (IGTs) that capture high-level geometric priors from input videos, as well as complementary Explicit Geometry Tokens (EGTs) that encode detailed geometric structures from reconstructed 3D attributes. On top of that, VLM-IE3D comes with a 3D-aware adapter that effectively fuses the two types of geometric representations with 2D visual cues. This RGB-only design injects strong 3D inductive biases for fine-grained spatial understanding and reasoning without requiring any additional 3D inputs. Extensive experiments show that VLM-IE3D achieves superior performance consistently across various 3D tasks including 3D video detection, 3D visual grounding, 3D dense captioning, and spatial reasoning. Vision-Language Models (VLMs) perform well on commonsense reasoning tasks but struggle with visual spatial reasoning. Most existing solutions introduce extra 3D prior inputs or external spatial encoders, which increase complexity and degrade the underlying VLMs' general-purpose capabilities after spatial fine-tuning. To this end, we propose a parameter-efficient \textit{\textbf{Spatio}-vision \textbf{L}anguage \textbf{M}odels (SpatioLM)}, that enhances spatial intelligence without extra 3D prior inputs or third-party spatial encoders. Concretely, we design a plug-and-play and non-invasive spatio-vision module that elicits the spatial knowledge inherent in VLMs. Furthermore, we innovatively leverage pseudo depth and camera information as supervision to guide the model in learning physically coherent representations. Extensive experiments show that SpatioLM achieves significant improvements in diverse tasks, including spatial perception and understanding while effectively limiting the degradation of general capabilities. Notably, the model achieves an impressive score of 71.6 on the VSI-Bench (the first model to surpass 70). In addition, it attains competitive performance when transferred to embodied manipulation tasks. Code is available at \href{https://github.com/xiaomi-research/spatio-lm}{\faGithub~spatio-lm}.
