Abstract

Recent 3DGS-SLAM systems enable real-time operation by leveraging conventional feature matching or ICP-based tracking, thereby avoiding the heavy dense photometric optimization used in earlier approaches. However, feature matching remains prone to failure in textureless environments, while ICP-based tracking struggles in structureless or geometrically degenerate scenes due to ill-conditioned optimization. To address this issue, we propose Spectral GS-SLAM, an efficient yet robust tracking framework that integrates ICP with complementary feature-based constraints. Our method mitigates numerical instability by adaptively compensating under-constrained directions in degenerate scenarios, without interfering with the shared Gaussian representation used for mapping. We further introduce a Gaussian-aware planarity weighting mechanism that exploits the intrinsic covariance structure of 3D Gaussians to characterize scene geometry and guide information fusion. Extensive evaluations on challenging TUM RGB-D sequences demonstrate that Spectral GS-SLAM achieves real-time performance (40.14 FPS) while maintaining consistent tracking in both structureless and featureless environments. The proposed method preserves trajectory integrity in degenerate scenes while maintaining competitive performance in non-adverse conditions.

LightSplat: Real-Time High-Fidelity 3D Gaussian SLAM with Loop Closure

SLAM systems based on 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) have recently demonstrated promising reconstruction accuracy for dense 3D scene representations. However, current 3DGS systems struggle to meet the strict demands of real-world deployments due to severe limitations in operational performance and map adaptability. To this end, we propose LightSplat, a hybrid-representation RGB-D SLAM framework. It synergizes local sparse features for robust and fast tracking with a dual-thread backend that progressively constructs dense Gaussian submaps. Crucially, we enable online loop closure through feature-accelerated 3DGS registration, refining overall map consistency through pose graph optimization. Ultimately, LightSplat achieves the online reconstruction of high-fidelity Gaussian map. Extensive experiments on multiple datasets and real-world robotic platform demonstrate that our method achieves near state-of-the-art reconstruction quality and the capability to accommodate practical camera motions, maintaining an average framerate of 8 FPS. Overall, LightSplat provides an efficient and robust foundation for deploying high-fidelity 3DGS in real-world environments.

Robust and Efficient Monocular 3D Gaussian SLAM for Kilometer-Scale Outdoor Scenes

Scaling monocular 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) SLAM to kilometer-level outdoor environments poses two tightly coupled challenges: fragile long-term pose tracking and excessive memory overhead during large-scale mapping. In this paper, we propose KiloGS-SLAM, a highly efficient and robust monocular 3DGS-SLAM system that jointly addresses both bottlenecks. Since high-fidelity scene reconstruction fundamentally relies on drift-free camera poses, we first introduce a motion-adaptive hybrid tracking module. This module features a condition-triggered three-tier solving pipeline. It dynamically switches between Essential matrix and PnP models to handle geometric degeneracies. An on-demand foundation model can also be activated to rescue the trajectory from catastrophic drift. To ensure the system can sustain these long trajectories without memory exhaustion, we subsequently design a lifecycle-managed Gaussian mapping strategy. By integrating probabilistic initialization with chunk-based multi-view densification and pruning, this full-pipeline optimization effectively reduces primitive redundancy while preserving high-frequency details. Together, the robust tracking guarantees the geometric foundation required for accurate mapping, while the memory-efficient lifecycle-managed mapping enables large-scale operation. Extensive experiments across three challenging outdoor datasets demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art tracking accuracy and rendering quality, successfully scaling to sequences of over 10,000 frames on a single GPU.

PanoGS-SLAM: Panoramic 3D Gaussian Splatting SLAM

Real-time dense SLAM is a core capability for robotics applications that require robust localization and high- quality mapping in dynamic or fast-changing environments. Recent 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS)-based SLAM methods have shown promising performance, but most are designed for narrow-FoV pinhole cameras, where limited angular coverage weakens pose observability and often leads to unstable photo- metric optimization under rapid motion and large viewpoint changes. We present PanoGS-SLAM, the first panoramic dense SLAM system built on 3D Gaussian Splatting. Our method per- forms differentiable rendering and pose optimization directly in the spherical domain, enabling omnidirectional photometric constraints for more stable tracking. To improve geometric consistency and robustness, we introduce (1) a sphere-consistent photometric loss that compensates for the area distortion of equirectangular projection, and (2) a depth-guided Gaussian initialization strategy that stabilizes incremental mapping in newly observed regions. Extensive experiments on both real and synthetic panoramic benchmarks (PALVIO and SynPano) show that PanoGS-SLAM consistently outperforms geometric and GS-based baselines in tracking accuracy and rendering quality, while achieving fast front-end convergence and real-time perfor- mance. In addition, controlled field-of-view experiments reveal a clear monotonic improvement in optimization conditioning and convergence stability as angular coverage increases, high- lighting the fundamental role of sensing geometry in shaping the optimization landscape of differentiable Gaussian-based SLAM.
