Abstract

Omnidirectional stereo images provide full-surround perception but violate the geometric assumptions of classical disparity estimation: in spherical or fisheye views, epipolar correspondences follow curved great-circle paths, producing two-dimensional displacements that cannot be treated as single-axis disparity before geometric rectification. In this work, we adopt a standard spherical-to-equirectangular (ERP) projection as a preprocessing step, which straightens epipolar curves and restores a one-dimensional disparity structure - horizontal for left-right rigs and vertical for top-bottom rigs. Building on our previously introduced RAFT + Epipolar-Aligned Channel Selection (EACS) framework, originally developed for rectilinear and ERP stereo, we examine whether the same modular pipeline remains accurate when the input originates from spherical stereo imagery. After ERP projection, dense optical flow from RAFT is reduced to disparity by retaining only the baseline-aligned flow component. Experiments on synthetic fisheye stereo datasets show that this spherical-to-ERP-to-RAFT+EACS pipeline produces accurate, smooth, and structurally consistent disparity maps at real-time speed. These findings confirm that established ERP preprocessing can be effectively combined with our earlier RAFT+EACS method to enable practical, interpretable, and efficient disparity estimation from spherical stereo, providing a straightforward pathway for extending conventional stereo pipelines to 360 imaging.

H-OmniStereo: Zero-Shot Omnidirectional Stereo Matching with Heading-Aligned Normal Priors

Stereo matching on top-bottom equirectangular images provides an effective framework for full-surround perception, as vertically aligned epipolar lines enable the use of advanced perspective stereo architectures that are largely driven by large-scale datasets and monocular priors. However, the performance of such adaptations is severely limited by the scarcity of omnidirectional stereo datasets and the degradation of perspective monocular priors under spherical distortions. To address these challenges, we propose H-OmniStereo, a zero-shot omnidirectional stereo matching framework. First, we construct high-quality synthetic dataset comprising over 2.8 million top-bottom equirectangular stereo pairs to scale up training. Second, we introduce an equirectangular monocular normal estimator, specifically operating in a heading-aligned coordinate system. Beyond providing distortion-robust and cross-view-consistent geometric priors for establishing reliable correspondences in stereo matching, this design boosts training efficiency and accommodates train-test FoV mismatches. Extensive experiments show that our approach achieves higher accuracy than existing methods on out-of-domain datasets and successfully generalizes to real-world consumer camera setups using a single model. The model and dataset will be released at https://github.com/JIANG-CX/H-OmniStereo.

Sphere-Depth: A Benchmark for Depth Estimation Methods with Varying Spherical Camera Orientations

Reliable depth estimation from spherical images is crucial for 360° vision in robotic navigation and immersive scene understanding. However, the onboard spherical camera can experience unintentional pose variations in real-world robotic platforms that, along with the geometric distortions inherent in equirectangular projections, significantly impact the effectiveness of depth estimation. To study this issue, a novel public benchmark, called Sphere-Depth, is introduced to systematically evaluate the robustness of monocular depth estimation models from equirectangular images in a reproducible way. Camera pose perturbations are simulated and used to assess the performance of a popular perspective-based model, Depth Anything, and of spherical-aware models such as Depth Anywhere, ACDNet, Bifuse++, and SliceNet. Furthermore, to ensure meaningful evaluation across models, a depth calibration-based error protocol is proposed to convert predicted relative depth values into metric depth values using supervised learned scaling factors for each model. Experiments show that even models explicitly designed to process spherical images exhibit substantial performance degradation when variations in the camera pose are observed with respect to the canonical pose. The full benchmark, evaluation protocol, and dataset splits are made publicly available at: https://github.com/sgazzeh/Sphere_depth

SphereSOD: Geometry-Structure Coupled Learning for 360 Salient Object Detection

360° salient object detection (SOD) aims to accurately segment salient regions across a full field of view. However, equirectangular projection (ERP) introduces severe spatial distortion when mapping the spherical domain onto a planar representation. Existing methods mainly focus on compensating projection distortion while overlooking the interaction between panoramic geometry and salient object structure during feature perception and prediction refinement. To this end, we propose SphereSOD, an ERP-native framework that couples panoramic geometry with evolving salient structures. Specifically, spherical geometry governs feature sampling and spatial weighting, while coarse-grained saliency and contour prediction influence context aggregation during the progressive decoding process. SphereSOD first initializes deformable sampling based on spherical projection geometry and then employs bounded, content-adaptive offsets, yielding features that are better aligned with the underlying panoramic geometry. Subsequently, the decoder performs structure-guided context aggregation and progressive refinement to recover complete salient regions and accurate boundaries. Extensive experiments on three public 360° SOD benchmarks demonstrate state-of-the-art performance and a favorable accuracy-efficiency trade-off, supporting structurepreserving inference directly in ERP space as a promising alternative to projection-heavy panoramic pipelines.
