NormAct: A Benchmark for Hidden Social Norm Compliance in Embodied Planning

Abstract

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) are increasingly deployed as embodied planners in egocentric environments, where task success requires not only achieving instructed goals but also acting in socially appropriate ways. While explicit goals may render certain actions optimal, implicit social norms often impose hidden constraints. Existing evaluations typically focus on explicit goal achievement or direct norm knowledge, seldom assessing whether planners can infer and apply these hidden constraints within action sequences. We introduce NormAct, a benchmark for embodied social-norm interactions that evaluates plans on Goal Achievement, Norm Compliance, and overall Task Success. NormAct uniquely embeds hidden norms within ordinary tasks, testing whether models can realize them without explicit instruction. Experiments with state-of-the-art MLLMs (GPT-5.4, Claude Opus 4.7, Gemini 3 Pro) reveal a significant gap: models achieve explicit goals in 67.3% of cases, but comply with hidden norms in only 26.4%. Cue-condition experiments indicate that this gap stems not from a lack of general social knowledge, but from challenges in activating and grounding relevant norms in context. To address this, we propose NormPerceptor, a context-conditioned cue generator that infers scene-relevant norms prior to planning, increasing Task Success from 24.2% to 46.7%. Our results underscore the importance of enabling embodied agents to proactively detect hidden norms, ground them in visual evidence, and integrate them as action-planning constraints. SocialGrid: A Benchmark for Planning and Social Reasoning in Embodied Multi-Agent Systems

As Large Language Models (LLMs) transition from text processors to autonomous agents, evaluating their social reasoning in embodied multi-agent settings becomes critical. We introduce SocialGrid, an embodied multi-agent environment inspired by Among Us that evaluates LLM agents on planning, task execution, and social reasoning. Our evaluations reveal that even the strongest open model (GPT-OSS-120B) achieves below 60% accuracy in task completion and planning, with agents getting stuck in repetitive behaviors or failing to navigate basic obstacles. Since poor navigation confounds evaluation of social intelligence, SocialGrid offers an optional Planning Oracle to isolate social reasoning from planning deficits. While planning assistance improves task completion, social reasoning remains a bottleneck: agents fail to detect deception at near-random chance regardless of scale, relying on shallow heuristics rather than accumulating behavioral evidence. SocialGrid provides automatic failure analysis and fine-grained metrics, enabling developers to diagnose and improve their agents. We also establish a competitive leaderboard using Elo ratings from adversarial league play.

SCENE: Recognizing Social Norms and Sanctioning in Group Chats

Online group chats are social spaces with implicit behavior patterns that, when broken, are often met with social sanctioning from the group. The ability and willingness of LLM-based agents to recognize and adapt to these norms remains mostly unexplored. We introduce SCENE, a social-interaction benchmark focused on implicit norms and social sanctioning in multi-party chat. SCENE generates plausible non-roleplay scenarios with scripted personas that follow a hidden norm, create opportunities for the subject agent to violate it, and sanction breaches when they occur. We further propose behavioral evaluation metrics for two functional adaptation abilities: responsiveness to negative sanctioning, and adapting norm from peers behavior. We evaluate six frontier and open-weight models on SCENE. Our results show that Claude Opus 4.7 and Gemini 3.1 Pro adapt to implicit norms significantly more than the evaluated open-weight models. SCENE contributes one benchmark in the direction of recent calls for dynamic, interactional evaluation of LLM social capabilities.

Plan Right, Then Plan Tight: Symbolic RL for Efficient Embodied Reasoning

Embodied task planning asks an agent to turn a natural-language instruction into an executable sequence of actions in a physical scene, and is a building block for household, assistive, and service robots. Recent prompting-based and reinforcement-learning planners generate fluent action text but lack a cheap deterministic check that the produced plan is valid in the target world, while high-fidelity simulation is too slow to serve as an inner-loop training signal. The general problem is therefore how to obtain verifiable supervision and rewards for embodied planners without relying on string-level matching or full simulation. Here we show that a single BDDL specification, automatically constructed from open-world video evidence or curated tasks, can serve as a shared interface for data construction, plan verification, and reward design. A video-to-BDDL parser, an LLM verifier, and a lightweight symbolic engine together supply dense feedback at millisecond latency. We further introduce GroupAdapt, a difficulty-aware length schedule that uses the in-batch group pass rate as a zero-cost signal so that hard prompts get wider length tolerance and automatically tighten as their pass rate improves. Under the guidance of the proposed verifier and GroupAdapt schedule, the 8B planner attains a Strict-Pass score of 97.3 on BEHAVIOR-1000, yielding a 25.9 percent relative improvement over the Qwen3-8B baseline. This result exceeds the strongest large-model baseline by 3.5 percent, while simultaneously compressing the response length by 79 percent to 207 tokens, demonstrating both effectiveness and efficiency.
