OASIS-Map: Object-Level Change Detection in Multi-Session Mapping using Semantic Correspondence Matching

Authors: Haedam OhYifu TaoNived ChebroluMaurice Fallon

Abstract

Map representations which are consistent across repeated visits to a real-world semi-static environment are very useful for long-term robotic inspection. In such settings, the scene may evolve while the robot is absent, with objects appearing, disappearing, moving, or being replaced, quickly making a static map outdated. Existing change-detection methods reason through geometry, category-level semantics, or object persistence. However, achieving reliable object association across revisits remains a key challenge, especially under partial views, occlusion, and imperfect segmentation. In this work, we propose OASIS-Map, a multi-session mapping system that maintains a spatio-temporally consistent object-level map by establishing dense patch-level semantic correspondences between temporal observations. These correspondences detect where the scene has changed and incrementally associate objects across revisits as the robot re-observes the environment. We demonstrate OASIS-Map on three challenging real-world scenarios: object rearrangements in 3RScan, visually similar car replacements in a car park, and large-scale scene changes in an outdoor market. We achieve 0.783 F1 on change detection in a car replacement scenario in a car park and 0.667 F1 on moved object association in 3RScan. https://dynamic.robots.ox.ac.uk/projects/oasis-map/

Online Geometric Change Detection via Scene Decomposition

Autonomous robots are increasingly deployed on long duration single- and multi-session missions in dynamic environments, where the ability to identify environmental changes such as fallen trees or opened doors provides important contextual information for online planning. We propose a framework called Change Detection via Scene Decomposition (CDSD) for accurate online geometric change detection using LiDAR or RGB-D sensors. Recent advances in geometric SLAM have made it possible to generate dense, tightly aligned maps without post processing, but comparing global maps across entire sessions is computationally expensive and does not allow for single-session online change detection. CDSD instead spatially decomposes mapped environments into unique scenes where changes can be found efficiently by comparing dense, local subsets of the global map called submaps. As the first submap-based approach for geometric change detection, we identify and address the following core challenges: 1) identifying appropriate scenes for change detection that require minimal redundant information; 2) generating dense and representative submaps for each scene; 3) detecting changes between submaps with differing fields of view; and 4) processing detected changes for real-time map reconstruction. Results demonstrate our algorithm on custom datasets collected at the Army Research Laboratory facility in Graces Quarters, Maryland, and on open-source multi-session change detection datasets.

MTD-Map: Single-Stage Long-Term LiDAR Map Maintenance Framework via Mixture Transition Distribution

While robust map maintenance has advanced significantly, existing studies have focused on specific tasks, especially dynamic object removal or change detection. In this paper, we take a holistic view of the map maintenance problem and propose MTD-Map, a single-stage framework that handles both dynamic object removal and change detection without separate task-specific modules. MTD-Map employs an explicit representation that compactly encodes the direction and duration of occupancy transitions through Mixture Transition Distribution (MTD) modeling. We develop a recursive MTD formulation that encodes historical occupancy patterns into an augmented state to capture high-order temporal dependencies. Furthermore, a stability-driven adaptive strategy balances noise suppression with the preservation of quasi-static structures. Extensive experiments verify that MTD-Map robustly removes dynamic objects and achieves competitive change detection performance, subsequently reducing computational costs. LoDA: A Level of Detection Aware Method and a Multimodal Sensing Benchmark for Object Level Change Detection

High-definition 3D LiDAR maps are important for autonomous driving and smart-city services, which require reliable detection of object-level changes in multi-temporal urban LiDAR to keep digital maps aligned with the physical world. Existing approaches from raster height differencing to depth image and point-cloud networks often remain tile-based and threshold-driven, yielding per-point scores without explicit detection limits or consistent object-level labels. We propose an object-level 3D change-detection pipeline that integrates detection-limit-aware registration, geometry-driven object proxies with rule-based semantic and instance segmentation, and displacement cues in height, volume, and surface-normal direction to assign five change labels with confidence. By decoupling registration, geometry, and semantics, the pipeline propagates pose uncertainty into spatially varying detection limits, stabilizes cross-epoch correspondences, and suppresses false changes caused by residual misalignment and density variation. We also present LoDA, a level-of-detection (LoD) aware benchmark for the Subiaco district with fused multi-temporal vehicle-LiDAR maps constructed with LiDAR, GNSS, and IMU support, semantic instances, and object-level annotations. On this benchmark, our method achieves 95.0% accuracy, 90.8% macro F1, and 83.0% macro IoU, exceeding the best baseline by 8.7 IoU points and 4.4 F1 points. On the public Urb3DCD-V2 benchmark evaluated under the official point-wise protocol, it reaches 96.81% mean accuracy and 89.52% mean change IoU, improving over the strongest reported baselines by 1.36 points in mAcc and 3.18 points in mIoUch.
